There is a new 900 mhz texting platform that is just getting started. I just ran across it, so don't know much more than videos. There are two architectures that run on the same hardware. The primary advantage of Meshtastic is that it is fully peer-to-peer text forwarding with no recourse to cell towers. Meshcore requires repeaters, which can be solar powered, are cheap, and have to be user installed.
Meshtastic uses peer-to-peer nodes, which work best for local conversations with few hops. Maximum hops 7, default 5.
Meshcore, uses a router architecture, requires router setup, but then can bounce messages hundreds of miles.
