My 2005 NH TC40da doesn't get a lot use - less than 700 hours since I purchased it new. I have treated and filtered every once of fuel using a Mr. Funnel filter and have never had a single issue. Last fall, I started to top off the tank before parking it in barn for limited (to wood splitting and snow plowing) winter use. I am old enough to have gone to a 5 gallon can sitting on a step ladder with a 12v pump to get the fuel into the filter and the NH tank, which is at a high point at the rear of the tractor. I don't like holding a 5 gallon can over my head. I normally just turn the pump on and it empties itself in a couple of minutes. Not this time. The funnel filled up and wouldn't drain.
I assumed the filter had finally failed. I couldn't complain about any product that lasted 15 years. So I ordered a replacement. It appears to be the same, except the color has changed from yellow to black. We were expecting a big snow (and we got it), so I put the chains on, along with the 7' front plow and decided to try the new filter. Same fuel can and same results. The funnel filter quickly filled and just sat there.
Feeling desperate, I drove to town, purchased a new fuel can and filled it with fresh fuel. Same result. Fuel just sits in the funnel. But the question remains, is it the funnel filter or the fuel? I'm thinking the old fuel may have 'clogged" the filter (both of them) and the new fuel couldn't flow because of the remaining residue. At that point, I topped off the tank with the fresh (treated) fuel without use the funnel.
i have since put some gasoline through the old "yellow" filter and that seemed to work. I have not applied this treatment to the new filter. So, Im left with a couple of questions:
1. Is it possible that something in the fuel (it had been treated with Diesel Power) clogged both filters?
2. If so, should I dispose of the old fuel (approximately 7 gallons) or would you think it is "safe" to use.
I did a search and saw a recent discussion of the Mr. Funnel. As is common, there are a number of thoughts as to the usefulness. But with 15 years of no fuel problems, i'm not ready to give up on my fueling methods. Thoughts?
