Old Massey, new-to-us McCormick CX 100
Hello fellow tractor by net forum members,
Name’s Tom, and I’m brand new to this board! Please let me know if this post belongs somewhere else or breaks the rules.
It so happens my dad got a cheap working McCormick CX100 that eats tires cause the 4WD is always on. We took a quick look at the tractor and it appears to us that the issue might be caused - shocker - by what we think is the 2/4WD selector being wired to nothing at all. We’re now trying to find out how to wire the thing, with which gauge, and to where, but we haven’t been able to find much on it.
The switch can be found attached.
Does any of you tractor veterans have any leads as to how get this issue fixed? We’d rather, of course, do it ourselves as mechanics round here aren’t quite up to snuff.
Thank you all beforehand,
Tom

isn't there a harness dangling below the plug?

Hello Bill. Thank you for your reply.
There’s absolutely nothing even remotely close - any related wiring is gone gone. PO probably ripped it off or something, for whatever reason.
Bill, do you happen to know the part number for this harness?
Thanks once again.

bud I don't own the tractor, sorry, if the harness is gone, your life is probably going to be difficult, hopefully someone who owns the tractor can chime in.

This was likely part of the chassis harness. Hopefully it was just disconnected and laying out of sight somewhere. That switch would go to a relay that would power a solenoid valve that would hydraulically release the fwd clutch. That model tractor originated as a Case CX100 made by Case from 1998 through 2002 and was provided to McCormick in conditions of a merger. Early models would share parts with the Case model. If you can locate the solenoid valve it should be possible to trace the wiring backwards. It should be on the transmission somewhere. Recognizing it may be a challenge.

Thanks a bunch guys - will need to do a lot of digging.
I think I’ll buy the manuals. That might just be the clearest way forward.

Best regards,

Tom

I'd check where it actually engages. I've seen the fork taken out of selector and 4x4 engaged and then put fork behind where it is supposed to be. Holding it in 4x4 full time. Seen it done to hold in 4x2 also. You should check it. Running 4x4 on hard surfaces wears prematurely or it will break something. Nothing is cheap on a 4x4 tractor.

Many of the larger tractors the 4wd is always engaged untill switched off.
That way when shut off they are in 4wd.
That switch should have a harness for it that may have fallen down in the inner fender area,
there may be a relay in the system then the solenoid that will allow hydraulic flow to release the 4wd clutch.
That may be located close to were the front driveshaft comes out of the transmission housing.

Added this;
this link should take you to picture of the solenoid,
