Do crickets eat tomatoes? I needed to add Lime to my tomatoes so I got up bright and early Saturday morning and used a trowel to loosen up the dirt around the trunk of the plants. While I was down there I noticed a number of big fat black crickets. I was thinking I'd like to catch some of them to use for bait when I take the granddaughters fishing. Then I noticed a ripe tomato up inside the plant near the ground so I plucked it. When I pulled it out, I discovered that the whole bottom half of the tomato had been eaten. I found 3 or 4 more that had the same thing done to them. I've been experiencing blossom rot on these tomatoes which was the reason for the lime but this had definitely been eaten, it wasn't blossom rot or at least it wasn't the way blossom rot has looked up to this time. Could it be those crickets eating the tomato since it's so hot and dry? They're looking for moisture and find it in the tomato? I went back out Saturday evening and doused the plants with Sevin dust to hopefully stop whatever it is that is eating them.

Put some bonemeal around the bottom of your tomatoes, to help with the blossom rot problem.
Next year put some in the hole when you plant the tomatoes.
