Our county is today celebrating. For the snob:) in me it feels funny to celebrate something short lived like that, but hey, I am an American now:D

Overseas we had to participate in the communistic demonstration, march in front of the leaders to demonstrate our unity against the evil imperialism and such :D

But because of poetry from Karel Macha it was always the National Love Day. In Prague to keep your lover forever you were supposed to have a - let's say GO :D - in the park near the statue on May 1st. It was not officially recognized, but surprisingly it was much more celebrated:)

Anything special connected to May 1st for USA?

Interesting that you brought this up as I wished my wife and kids a happy May Day this morning. They looked at me like I was nuts. When I was a kid, my sisters always made a big deal out of May Day. For the life of me, I do not know why as we were all born and raised in Indiana.

Anyway, I was always fascinated by the communist military displays and parades that would always be shown on the news on the 1st of May.

Hmm,

Well happy May-Day to ya! I remember dancing around the May Pole in kindergarten. And I was not in Europe at the time. So what happened? Did the celbrations go away with a lack of the evil empire?

And it all started in Chicago.

But Czech and Moravian villages celebrate May too for centuries, before Macha and before communists.

Very interesting post. We don't seem to do anything here in Canada for this day (although it's my wife's b'day May 2 so I personally have an annual scramble for cards and gifts).

I heard on the news today of riots in many countries for May day. That is kind of sad to hear.

Thanks for the history lesson!

Nothing of broad significance but our hispanic citizens will celebrate Cinco de Mayo, May 5, the day Mexico won independence from France.

Lots of fun, dances and good eating.
