What size rotary cutter can I use behind a max 28? I have a 5 foot finish mower, and was just wondering if a 5 foot rotary cutter would work too?

Rotary cutters are usually heavier and require more HP than a finish mower of the same width.

The rule-of-thumb is 5 PTO HP per foot of cutting width. Most manufacturers offer light-, medium-, and heavy-duty cutters with minimum HP requirements increasing with weight.

Your best bet is to check the HP requirements provided by the various manufacturers.

It will also depend on the speed you want to mow and what you are mowing.

In order to minimize the number of passes to mow between the blueberry bushes I am running a 6ft brush hog. Of course my travel speed is barely walking.

It still cuts my time in half compared to the way it was done previously.

I intend to buy one for mine. From my research it will run a 5 foot, but I plan to buy a 4 foot because I have limited storage room.

I'm probably going to go with a 5' mower. I'm getting it to use at my parents place and if its too much for the Mahindra, my brother has a MF 230 that I believe can handle it.

I have a 3016 and it looks like the 28 has the same pto HP. If that is correct, your 28 should handle a 5 ft no problem.

It will handle a 5 no problem... Know a guy pulling a 5ft with a 2015 Mahindra that actually does it well also

I have a 5" rotary cutter behind my Max 28 and it has never really even strained the engine at all and I have run it through some pretty heavy brush.

I don't know how big the cutter I have is (either 4 or 5, didn't measure it), but only drags things down when I back over relatively large brush (think small trees). It doesn't have traditional bushhog 'blades' on it though, more along the lines of hinged 3/8 to 1/2in lawn mower blades. I discovered this when the stump jumper retention nut came off and it all came out from under the cutter ($200 implements maybe should be looked over a little closer ;) I checked oil, fixed a couple small things and then took it out to the back of the back 40 for a test run and it did well, so I didn't think to check up underneath). No damage, but it made a helluva racket for a second, then everything got smooth and quiet..
