But you alluded to an important point. Why do some loaders left in the air stay there for weeks? I haven't a clue....

Counterbalance Valves are typically installed where loads are suspended and stored in hydraulic cylinders such as a loader. They could also be installed in a backhoe hydraulic system, but not as prevalent.
