When my tractor runs for a while and turn off it won't start again until it cools off, what could cause this? Thanks

We would need a bit more detail. Does the starter make any clicking noises? Have you checked all of the electrical connections and wiring? If the starter is not turning the engine over then it is likely an electrical / starter motor issue. If the starter is turning the engine over and the engine is not starting then it is likely ignition / fuel issue.

It turns over like normal, just won't start until is cools off.

Just to be clear "won't crank" means the engine is not turning over. It is important to use the correct terminology if you expect a diagnosis over the internet.

When this condition happens try starting the tractor with the gas cap loose or off. If it starts then the tank vent is likely clogged.

Is there any ice developing on the carburetor when this condition happens?

When was the last time you adjusted points and replaced spark plugs? Replaced fuel filter?

Just purchased tractor, noticed previous owner put an inline fuel filter on it. Would that interfere with fuel flow since it already has the glass bowl with screen filter in it? Just adjusted points, noticed top contact seemed alot shorter in height than bottom contact, that caused by burning? Haven't changed plugs yet. One plug wire is loose in distributor cap.

Also, is there a fuel pump on this tractor or is it gravity feed?

Gravity fed and if inline filter allows enough gas to run normal it isn't restricting flow while starting. Modern day ignition condensers are low quality and often fail when hot and not unusual for them to fail outright. Although rare, carb bowl can overheat causing "vapor-loc. To narrow it down to fuel or spark I suggest a suqirt of ether or carb cleaner while cranking. If that makes it fire (not neccessarily start and run) the problem is in fuel system. If it doesn't fire on ether pull a plug wire and hold 1/4" from plug or any metal part while cranking. If there's no spark jumping gap the problem is in ignition system.

Try starting your tractor at night in the dark if the wires are bad
you will see the sparks

Have you tried to start with throtle wide open??

If the condenser is bad and you try to start the tractor when its hot and
no start have a can of r134a and spray the condenser then if it starts
replace condenser its a capacitor and when they heat up they open up
but work fine when cold. Working on TV's we found this to be the best
way to find the one that's open when hot

Also, I noticed when I took the distributor cap off it looked like gold dust in there, what caused that, guess it's from the rotor?

Tractor will run all day but when it gets hot and you shut off at key, it won't restart until it cools down. The tractor seems to what to start but doesn't, just pops like it is going to start then it dies. Thinking it is a fuel issue. I know it is getting fuel in carburetor. Any ideas please?
