I am having a really hard time with the id of this motor. It is polish built and I need an engine overhaul kit for it. Any ideas would be great. Thanks Brian

I put something like (MF 261 engine overhall kit) in a search engine and came up with this Massey Ferguson 4.236 Overhaul Kit (OK445, 50C, 165, 175, 255, 261, 265, 270, 275)
Searching for ( A4.236 Perkins Diesel overhaul kit) bought some matches but didn't specify that they fit the 261.

I have contacted every massey ferguson dealer in 300 miles and no one seems to be able to id the motor. I am having a really hard life right now and just need some help. Thanks Brian

Could you explain in more detail what you mean by "id the motor"? Isn't it a 4.236 Perkins?

yes but when I try to order parts they want the numbers off the block by the fuel pump. It comes up to be polish built but the numbers don't cross to anything they can find. I don't understand they are the ones that built the tractor. there are two sets of numbers by the fuel pump 87059 PO16043

I cant offer you any help as to why you are getting the run around on ordering this stuff.
What I can tell you is this - whenever I pull up a 261 in the online parts book, I show no special notes regarding your engine being made in Poland or England, or any other country for that matter. If its a perkins engine then its a 4.236.
The pistons it shows has 3 compression rings with the wiper rings at the bottom, so essentially your pistons will have 4 grooves in them. Sometimes we see different variants of pistons on motors, I only see one on your motor.
What they are wanting the numbers for is for two things. First that number gives them the build list. Gives them a cheat sheet of all part numbers on the build. They will not find one for that tractor in their fancy computers. The second reason is if there is a case of serial number separation between two parts.
Lets say they are calling your tractors serial number 87059 as you have listed.
So then lets say that we are looking up a wheel seal for an axle. (just an example)
You sometimes find where it will say Part # 123x for serial # prior to 86451 or Part # 223x for 86452 and up.
In this case you would get the 223x part as your serial number comes after the break.
I see no such case when it comes to the parts that you are going to need to rebuild your motor.
You are dealing with a parts guy that has worked 5 years or less and has no idea about the old stuff. You are going to have to deal with an older salesman that has been there for many years to get past the computer generation of parts guys.
Do you have the motor apart yet where you could look at a few things for me and perhaps measure some stuff.

No I have not done a tear down on it yet. I am getting ready to move and I did not want it in pieces. I also wanted to have the parts here ready to build. Thanks for your info Massey Wrench. You are a nice guy. I appreciate it. I wish you were local. I have been in the automotive industry for 30 yrs and I agree about this computer generation just wants to argue because of what there computer says. Even if I have the part in my hand. They can't think and go to the books. At the local parts store I tell them to bring me the books and I look it up myself.

I see now. One day I may be in the same situation you're in so, I'm trying to learn as much as I can now. Fortunately Masseywrench has joined the thread.

You and MasseyWrench are way ahead of me. Somewhere, I got the idea that it would be good for me to have a parts book. I think I downloaded one but the numbers ran together so badly that alot of them were illegable. Utimately, I bought a hard copy. It appears to be a dealer book. If you need clarification of any numbers, tell me which part to look for, and I'll see what my book says. I also have access to two 261s. If anything I can tell you from looking at them will help, give me a yell.
