Massey Ferguson 231shuts completely down and has to be bled each time

My Massey Ferguson 231 will run for about 2 hours. Before it does, it revs up as high as it can get, then it shuts down. I can't get it to start again, ever, unless I bleed it out each time. I just replaced the fuel lift pump, and I have noticed that it is smoking around where the thermostart is. Do I need to replace the thermostart? Has anybody else had this problem, and if so, what was the solution? Any ideas? Thanks!

G'day Herman and :welcome: I suppose you have changed the fuel filter? Although two hours seems a long time for it to run on a blocked filter maybe check the suction line for the fuel and see if you can blow compressed air back through it, if you can remove the pickup out of the tank before you do this then even better, you may have something floating around in the tank causing a blockage every now and then.

As for the thermostart check the wire onto it is a good snug fit and the pipe going into it is tight.

the next time you take the tractor out and it shuts down put your hand on the injector pump ...if it is hot . and i mean hot . your pump is shot .the pump stops pumping and then loses prime ... when you bleed the lines i take it its cooled down by then... ..if this is happening dump a court of trany oil in your diesel tank this will lube the pump and bring your run time longer ..if not fix the problem .... let me know will you
