I have a Massey Ferguson 135 Deluxe with differential lock. I need to replace the oil seals on the right rear axle half-shaft. The I&T manual warns that the differential lock coupler will fall off and drop into the axle housing when the axle shaft is withdrawn, but two other manuals (Jensales, Best Manuals) make no mention about this. So my question is: can the right-hand axle shaft be safely withdrawn without the differential lock coupler will falling into the axle housing?? Thanks!

It looks to me there is a coupler that is around the axle that slides to engage to lock the right side. If you where to slide just the axle out as in other tractors not equipped with differential locking. It could fall off. From reading the proceedure. The axle housing has to be removed with the axle to keep everything in place. Then you remove the coupler and associated parts before you pull the axle. I'm referencing the MF shop manual from Agco.
If I where you I'd take a look at the entire assembly at AGCO Parts Books

Log in as QUEST. Type in 135 and select Massey Ferguson in the pull down window. Select 135 TRACTOR
Scroll down to Axle assembly with differential lock. You can print illustration page and part numbers. You will need the part numbers when ordering your seal.

Before I pulled the housing off, I would engage the dif lock and secure it. Once engaged, the fork should hold the coupler in place while the axle is slipped out, and hopefully slid back in. If the coupler falls, then pull the housing.

Have you done this before? It would be quite a magic act if it can be pulled off. That coupling is on the end of the axle inside the housing.

That aligns with the cautionary note in the I&T There are a few write-ups where the I&T makes you glad you bought it - I guess this is one of them. Thanks Kid!

Bob are you talking about agco parts book site? If so. Click the GUEST button. No password required. Then type in 135 or what ever type MF you have and next box select Massey Ferguson in the drop down window. You must be using Microsoft Internet Explorer with Silverlight installed for the zoomable graphic images to come up. -kid

G'day klancef51.
The best way and the easiest way is to remove the complete axle assembly, strip it down ,when you come to remove the axle you will find that the shaft end float shims will be broken or cracked , carefully remove all of the shims and measure the TOTAL thickness, replace the shims with either new shims or make a gasket of the same thickness as the TOTAL thickness.
Assemble the axle as a unit and remove the LEFT HAND AXLE and adjust the end float ,it should be about .005 Inches to .010 Inches clearance, this is the best way to do the job .
And yes the diff lock cone will fall out even if you try to lock wire the pedal down.
Regards.

Have you done it before? I think not. There is a lot more to the process than simply looking at a parts diagram or reading a manual.

Very good advice, and as mentioned the diff lock coupler can and most likely will fall off. I know, as I have experienced that very same issue and learned my lesson the hard way.
