FM 135 3 cylinder Gasser
I need assistance with the order of Spark Plug Wires to Distributor Cap?
.
Mid 70 MF 135 3 Cylinder Gasser. I think it is a Perkin痴 engine.
.
I have read the firing order as 1,2,3. I think number cylinder #1 is close to the radiator (am I right). I think #1 is the top left of the Distributor Cap. If this is true, then #2 is in the middle, and #3 is on the bottom right.
.
I am asking before I mess everything up.
.
In my previous post I told the story about a sort has melted the wiring harness and my Dad痴 Alzheimer痴. After I got the MF 135 rewired (Except the non-Amp Meter wiring) and a Starter Solenoid I still had no fire. My father is (was a master shade tree farm mechanic). He knows what he is doing, but he cannot remember what he has done. He popped the Distributor Cap off and performed field testing and diagnosed that we should replace the Condenser.
.
I was plugging everything back together until I can order parts. I ask my Dad the order of the plug wires. You know the answer: I do not know. I love my Dad. He is in his late 80s. Very healthy, but fighting a disease that is frustrating to him and everyone around him. God bless that man; I am a good mechanic, but I will never have the skills that he has.
.
I am getting juice to the Distributor Cap, but no spark. The coil and connectors are very rusted. I have on order a new Coil, Distributor Cap, Condenser, Points, Wires, and Plugs. Due to the overheated wiring harness I decided to replace everything and be done with it. I know it is over kill, but when I go out to the farm and fire that baby up I want her to run the best she can.
.
Please confirm:
Points Gap = 0.021 inch
Plug Gap = 0.025 inch.
.
Thank you in advance for your assistance,
Smitty

#1 cylinder is closest to the radiator.

Since you removed the plug wires and don't know where the engine is in its firing order you'll have to re-time it. Remove the spark plugs, and locate the timing mark. You need to find the compression stroke on # 1 cylinder so hold your thumb over the spark plug hole on the #1 cylinder and bump the starter till you feel pressure on your thumb. Now using the timing marks get the #1 piston to the timing mark by bumping the starter. Now you know that the #1 piston is at the static firing point. take off the distributor cap and see what position on the cap the rotor is pointing at. That's the # 1 spark plug wire location. If the rotor revolves in the CCW direction, the next plug wire(#2) will go in the next hole.

If you removed the distributor and have "lost the timing" then the rotor maybe point between two plug wire locations on the cap. If that's the case, loosen the distributor hold down bolt and rotate the distributor until the rotor points to one of the terminal positions on the cap. That will become the # 1 position and the rest of the plug wire positions are determined as in the previous paragraph. Be sure to tighten down the distributor hold down bolt before proceeding. When you have done this, you need to realize that the rotor is "approximately" at the correct timing point. To check the correct static timing, makes sure that the coil and the rest of the ignition system is connected and turn on the ignition switch. Loosen the distributor hold down bolt again making sure that it is not too loose, hold the #1 plug wire near a good ground and slowly rotate the distributor back and forth in small increasing increments until you hear the spark snap. (MAKE SURE YOU DON"T HAVE A FINGER NEAR THE PLUG END OF THE PLUG WIRE!) The point where the spark snaps is the static timing point. You may have to do it a few times to get it right but when you feel you do, carefully tighten down the hold down bolt.

When you get the engine running, recheck the timing with a timing light and check that the advance mechanism is working by speeding up the engine and observe the timing change with the timing light.

Ditto what Jerry/MT said. the reason you can't just choose positions on the cap is as Jerry said. the dizzy may have been pulled and replaced making the 'starting' position different.. though their relative positions to each other will be the same, once you find starting position.
