I just acquired a Massey Ferguson 1030 4wd. She is in need of some TLC but I think is going to be a nice little tractor. The model number on the tag only says MF1030. I know there are some 1030-L models out there but I do not know what that means. My questions are:

1 . How do I know if its a synchro trans, or just a standard trans. I am ordering manuals and dont know which it is. I was figuring there has to be a tell sign of whether it is synchro or not. Any ideas?

2. Second question, I am not sure if the four wheel drive is working or not. The lever to engage the front end I believe is on the left hand side right under the seat. All the labels are gone so the levers have been best guess so far. My question is, is up suppose to engage 4wd, or is the downward position suppose to engage 4wd? Or is this lever something else?

3. What does the L stand for on some 1030's?

4. Is there anywhere, or anyone I can give the serial number to that would tell me all of this data?

Any help would be great..

Good Afternoon Solar,
Congrats on your new tractor.

The MF1030 is the little brother to my tractor the MF 1040.
If the 4WD is working the lever should be in the downward position. I believe that your transmission is the same setup as mine, there are three ranges, low, medium and high. Four forward gears in each range and a reverse. I almost allways am in mid range. For bush hoggin the fields here I usually use mid range 4th gear, and thats about 3.5 mph maybe slightly less.

You select your range and gear and your all set, there is a bit of a knack to shift gears while moving , I usually dont do that.

Im not familiar with the L model designation but here is some info off of Tractor Data, TractorData.com Massey Ferguson 1030 tractor dimensions information

You can find what year tractor you have through the serial #'s etc and some basic info on your machine...

Hope this helps a little. I have owned mine since early 2004 and it has been a work horse. If you have any further questions let me know...

This is great info. I am away from home this week but am excited to get home at check. I do have exactly the gears you speak of, but looking at the service manual I purchased, it looks like the synchro transmission as the same gears, so I dont know if mine is the synchro or not. I am not sure how to tell, and I am not sure what the L means on some of the 1030L's people speak of either. I imagine it actually says MF1030-L on the model tag if thats what I had, so I believe mine is a regular ol 1030, just not sure if it is a synchro or not.

The only thing I am worried about at this point (which is why I purchased a pricey service manual) is the front axle has quite a bit of front and back play at the pivot point. I really hope I am going to be able to fix this, but I am worried finding the parts are not going to be possible. So any guidance on places to buy parts would be great too.. :)

With the front axle play I would think you could put some spacers in there. I can check my manaul to see what it says and can see if if had the scematic for it.

Well I believe I have all my questions answered, I purchased (a rather pricey) shop manual from yesterdays tractor. I found that I must have a standard trans, as the book shows the std and the synchro trans tractors have different wheel base distances front to back. Mine measured closest to the standard which is a shorter wheel base length.
