Hi,Im new to the forum although I have been reading here for some time while I was looking for a tractor. I just bought a Massey Ferguson 1010 from craigslist the thing runs great but as you can see from the listing it has a problem with the three point. I havent looked at it at all yet but I will be checking it out soon, I was just wondering if you could give me any advice of a common problem or a place to start? This is my first "tractor" Ive owned. When I move it to raise lower nothing seems to happen at all. He told me that he changed all the fluids and it raised one time after he did that and that was all? I paid $1400 hope thats a decent price, seemed worth the gamble to get it fixed.

I'd say you might have gotten a great deal on that tractor. They are sort of "old school" but tough machines.

Not sure from your post whether you are unable to raise the 3pt, unable to lower it, or both.

Under the front lip of the seat there's a knob to control lowering rate. If this knob is turned clockwise until it stops it will indeed lock up the raising and lowering rate, producing the effect you described.

There could be something else wrong of course, but try turning that knob counterclockwise a couple turns and see what happens.....and let us know.

Well I did try the knob and it didnt do anything. I tore the valve assembly apart, I wasnt sure how it all works but I made sure everything was moving and I cleaned it all out and put it back together and it worked after that. I tested it several times that night and the next day but it started acting funny last night it would go up alittle then stop sometimes. The guys said that when he changed the fluid it had some water in it ( I think thats from being stored in a barn with a bad boot on the shifter?) The stuff in it now is still milky because I dont think he got it all out. Im wondering if that could do it? I am going to change the fluid but I wasnt sure exactly what it took, I ordered a manual yesterday so that should help me out. But so far it seems like a good tractor, just needs some little stuff. The bearings on the deck need replaced but besides those two things it should be ready to go.

I looked at one of these a while back, same problem. The owner said it had worked and then it had tried to work but when I looked at it the 3pt wasn't budging. I could tell he'd been leaving it outside and uncovered. A look at the hydraulic dipstick showed the white oil you'd expect from water. It had an external hydraulic pump as I remember. I guess it is a good start to redo the oil and filter with something you are confident in and then see what the pressure is at the hydraulic pump. Hopefully it is just water, I understand getting parts for it may take some effort.

Ok, so the simple fix didn't help! Sorry that wasn't it.

If you want to change fluid, buy 4 gals of Permatran III from your MF dealer. It holds 4.5, but you'll never be able to drain all the old stuff out completely. My owner's manual says you can also use SAE 80 GL-3 or GL-4, so if you want to try WalMart or Tractor Supply, you may find it there.

The dealer has filters, but you can also use Wix 51210 or NAPA FIL1210. Park the tractor facing up hill and lower the 3 point if it will go down. Remove the tractor drawbar. Beneath the drawbar receiver there's a drainplug for the hydraulic fluid. I seem to recal it is metric, maybe 21 or 22 mm. Pull the plug and let the fluid drain out.

The filter is just inside the left side rear wheel, so you can reach it pretty easily. Change the filter, replace the drain plug, and then add maybe 3.5 gals of fluid through the rubber plug right beside the trans fluid dipstick in front of the seat. Start the tractor, raise and lower the 3 point hitch several times, and move the tractor to level ground. Shut off the engine, wait a bit, and recheck the oil level.

Good luck, let us know if the fluid change helped. You might need to try it a few times if there's much water in it since it will not all drain out. And you might want to check the dust boot, dipstick, and rubber plug on the trans housing to make sure they are not leaking.

Regardless of what the seller told you about changing all the fluids, Change the hydrolic spin off filter. It's a very cheap shot at fixing whats wrong, and if it works, Walla! The easiest way to do this is jack up to side of the tractor under the rear axle, remove the rear weel and tire, and put a 5 gaollon bucket under the filter. Assuming that you have already got a new filter in hand, spin off the old one and immediately spinn on the new one, haste being necessary to prevent loss of fluid. It fixed the same thing on my Massey 1010! Good luck!
