Hi guys,
I'm posting this so maybe it will help someone who has had the similar problem.
About a month ago, while discing, my 12*4 transmission shifter lever (the right one: 1,2,3 and reverse) suddenly got stuck in second gear and the shifter would simply NOT move. -- so I while I still had four forward speeds with the left shifter-- I had NO reverse. Managed to finish discing in forward then prepared to split the tractor since I didn't know whether the problem was in the shifter mechanism or inside the transmission.
--Anyways, I pulled out the shifter levers, and the external cover covering the shifter mechanism outside the transmission (it's a side shifter), and took apart the shifter cams, keys etc. that sit on the shifter shafts (there are four shifter shafts---each inside the other). In doing this I found a pivot bushing above the shifter shafts, and this toothed shifter piece bushing was FROZEN to the pivot shaft. this pivot shaft is located above the four shifter shafts that are one-inside-the-other. Anyways, I worked off the frozen bushing, lubed it and put the assembly back together, and the right shifter knob now works for all gears (1,2,3, and reverse).
My point in posting this is this: There is a greaser that greases all the bushings and cams and shifter shafts. BUT THERE IS NOW WAY TO GREASE THE UPPER PIVOT SHAFT THAT SEIZED AND CAUSED THE RIGHT SHIFTER TO SEIZE UP! My tractor has 2000 hours on it-- and I'm surprised it made it this far.
--- So if your the right shifter of your 596 with a 12*4 trans locks up (I think it could be in 1,2,3 or reverse, but mine got stuck in 2nd gear)-- check out this bushing that CANNOT be lubricated!! You might avoid unnecessarily splitting your tractor.
