I know this has been covered but I am unable to fix my issues. The tranny in my massey 35 got stuck in reverse while in use. I followed the directions that people have supplied regarding moving the large gear forward using a screw driver in the oil fill. I have done this and it slid about 1.5" forward however the shifter is still stuck and has no movement. Any suggestions on correcting the situation would be appreciated. I have photos if that helps.

When I slid the large gear forward it slide as far forward as it goes till it hit the dividing cast wall. Now I can't move that large gear back. When you say keep wiggling the gears are you referring to the large one forward to back? The gears spin clockwise/counterclockwise freely when clutch is applied.

Yes its a real common issue that i dont have the answer to. It has happened to me several times and to be honest I dont know why or what changes it. I thave mine stuck in first or reverse. I have walked away and come back with my big screwdriver wiggle/pry and the it justs pops inplace and works fine.... The thing I know to prevent this is being completely stopped and fully engage the gears before releasing the clutch.

I got it! Thanks for the help. The key for me anyway was the large gear had slid to far forward. With the clutch depressed and a longer pry bar I got it to move backwards. I did this while applying slight pressure on the shift handle. Then once things started moving it was just matter of moving the shifter around a bit and she went in.

This problem occurs with older manual transmission tractors. The culprit is a dragging clutch. If the tractor has a loader it will happen when you drive into a pile of dirt and shift to reverse (while there is still some pressure caused by the dragging clutch, on the gears). If the selector lever requires some effort to move you are at risk. The gear selector will jump out of engagement with the selector forks which move the gears. Removing the top of the transmission on many models takes the selector lever with it. Then you align all the selector forks inside the transmission like you are selecting neutral, and re install the cover with the lever in the neutral position. On an old Nuffield I had I could do the fix in minutes especially if I had access to shop air for an air wrench. Adjusting the clutch pedal free play will help but the clutch pedal shaft bushings need to be in good condition and not heavily worn.
Sometimes the transmission will end up in two gears at the same time which effectively locks it. Don't try and operate the tractor with the transmission locked or you will turn a small problem into a disaster.
