261 Massey
Hi Everyone,
I am wondering if anyone has had this issue before. I have a Massey Ferguson 261 that has a knocking noise coming from the gearbox. It does it whether the tractor is moving or in neutral. The sound varies with the RPMs. The only time it stops is when the clutch is fully depressed to the point that it would disengage the PTO if it was operating. Any thoughts?

Probably the hydraulic pump for the 3pt, check that the levere om the quadrant is not in the posisjon constant pumping or you have any other valve not in neutral.

Just getting back on the computer after a busy weekend. Thank you Agvg for your reply. I will check that out. It will likely be a few days before I can respond as the tractor is at a farm owned by myself and the rest of my family and it is a long drive from my home. It seems odd that it started all of a sudden so your explanation makes sense. I will certainly let you know after I have a chance to check it out.

I believe that tractor could have an optional rear remote system installed by a dealer. If it is engaged the rear lift does not work, again if memory is correct. Look for levers on top of the transmission to shift from pumping to the rear remote(s) or the 3 pth. My brother as a higher number MF with that system and I am not aware it makes such a noise regardless the way those levers are set. But if the rear remote lever was locked into engage that might cause it.

Thanks kthompson. We purchased this tractor a short while ago so none of us are very familiar with it. So, these suggestions are very valuable. I hope it is this simple.

I believe kthompson is referring to the diverter valve. Mine is a Tisco300 and is located on the top cover in front of the seat on the RH side. It should be in the up position to operate the 3 point. Also, my 231S was knocking when the oil got hot. The sump was cleaned, a new filter installed and new oil installed. All is now quiet. The pumps in these MFs rarely fail.
