Massey Ferguson 165
I have a Massey Ferguson 165, 4cyl Perkins Diesel. Came with a house I bought, previous owner said it was running when it was parked about 5 years ago.
I flushed the tank, changed the fuel filters, changed out all the rubber grommets on the fuel lines, replaced the o rings on the throttle and shut off shaft, and bled the systems numerous times. Still cannot get it to start. When I crack the injector lines loose, I get fuel dripping, engine will fire on starting fluid.

Is there a way to tell if the pump is bad?

Am I missing anything?

I'm no expert but maybe check your injector tips.
Is she smoking when you crank?
Is your battery fully charged and big enough?
Is the kill switch fully in? I've done that once or twice....

I got one running a while ago by pull starting for about 1/2 a mile. Problem with this is if there is internal damage you could make it worse.
They are lovely tractors, good luck

No smoke when cranking
Battery seems to crank it good
I have tried moving the kill switch

I thought about the pull start, but this tractor has Multi Power and was told you cannot pull start them.

I'd wait for some of then clever folks on the forum, they'll have younsorted in no time. If there's no smoke I'd say your not getting fuel through. Hopefully its something easy and cheap. I've never used a multi power machine, not many of them around here.

I would take the injectors out, and have them tested. They may need to be cleaned, or rebuilt from them sitting. You could also take the injector pump off, and have it tested also if the injectors aren't the problem.

You cannot pull start a multipower tractor.
Fuel: you say there is NO smoke when cranking so, No fuel going through.
Open both bleeders on the fuel pump(eyeball the hole in side of bleeder screw) and crank engine. You should have a steady continuous stream of diesel coming out. If so tighten and crack 1 line at injector to let air out and crank.(The engine can't fire if you crack all 4 injector lines).Once the engine has fired tighten the cracked line. If the engine is still running rough crack the other lines one at the time. I found cracking 1 line was usually enough .
If diesel stream is interupted you have air getting in up stream. Go to fuel tank/#1 filter pipe and disconnect at filter end, you should have a strong continuous flow.
If not then at the fuel tank inlet pipe there is a small filter that will block up with rust , crap etc. If that is blocked then you will need to clean your fuel tank out. I had this trouble with a 135
If you have good flow to the filters then the most likely cause is air lock when you changed the filters. To drain the air in the filter crack the #1/ #2 filter line, then loosen the bolt holding the filter on until diesel runs out the top of the filter at a similar rate to what come direct from the tank, then retighten. Diesel should now run out the line between the 2 filters.Wait until any bubbles have stopped then Retighten and repeat process for #2 filter.
Go to injector pump and and do bleed procedure as earlier.
NOTE if you get air at the injector pump but not at the filters and are unable to get rid of the air then you will need to remove the filters and carefully (use torch) check the large square "O" ring is flat and it is very easy to "roll" a section 90 degrees. This will let air in.
Tip: when changing fuel filters place filter in filter base ( as fitted to tractor) and place in bucket then fill with diesel to just over the filter, then carefully remove (keep filter full of diesel)and fit filter to tractor. This will minimise air locks. Repeat for 2nd filter. Done properly there won't be any bleeding to do and you can just fire up and go. There is a knack to this.
I hope this helps. It is far easier to show than explain.

don766, you give no indication of experience. There is 1 thing to be aware of with a multipower gearbox. NEVER EVER use Low multipower going down hill. You will run away as it freewheels (due to gearbox design). ALWAYS,ALWAYS, ALWAYS use HIGH multipower going downhill (engine braking). Also make sure other drivers know this.
Lastly. are there any pictures?

Recently got a 180 running that had been sitting 5yrs+. Had similar fuel issues... Turns out lift pump was toast. Would push a little fuel to drip out the bleeders but nowhere near enough to run it. Got it off and the diaphragm in the pump was gooey mess.

Sorry for the late response, have not had time to mess with it lately. With the bleeders open fuel does squirt out in a steady stream from the pump. Still will not fire, I unscrewed the injector lines on both sides and shot chemtool through them, reinstalled and tightened all but number 1, cranked forever till fuel drips out (it just barely drips) tightened back up. Still no luck

I am assuming the pump is bad.

yes I am aware of the drawbacks of multi power, goal is to getting it running and sell. I need something more suitable, lol I don't have any flat ground where I live. 2855936E-00BB-48F5-A48C-1105C7760D8A.JPG
