Massey 150 fuel problem

I just picked up a 68 Massey 150 diesel that requires priming to start. Once it starts it only idles -- but if you hit the priming pump it will rev up and run like a top. I cannot find any diesel leak anywhere. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like feed pump internal lever does not give full camlobe stroke as it should if hand lever use causes it to speed up. May be time for a new feed pump assy. If it still acts up injection metering valve may be sticking.

Thank you. It's odd -- it requires a few pumps to start and will only idle if I don't hand pump again (single pump) -- then it's off as normal. May have to repeat that cycle twice. I thought that I was drawing a leak from somewhere... and it seemed odd to me that, if the pump was bad, it would run relatively normal (can't say what's normal -- just got it) after the start up.

As dieseltech suggests replace the fuel lift pump they dont cost that much it will give you the opportunity to fix the OIL LEAK.
a quick test is to undo the discharge pipe from the pump and operate the priming lever if nothing comes out pull the engine stop out and holding the priming lever up gently ,crank the engine a little bit at a time and you will feel the priming lever go up and down this is it following the camshaft ,you want to stop it at the LOWEST point this will make sure you are getting a good full stroke,have a play .

Thank you. You lost me a little about the oil leak - I'm not having that problem. I was thinking that the fuel system was sucking air somewhere and that, if so, there should be some form of diesel leak at that site. Thanks again - I've got the fuel pump assembly on order.
