I have a massey 135 with weak hydraulics, it has gotten worse over the years. Everything operates as normal but it has gotten weaker on the 3 point lift (I never use it anyways) but now it won't lift the cutter head on my mower. Pressure test shows only 400 psi max. My question is could this be relief valve or is there any way to test the pump?

Oh yeah, brand new clean fluid and clean filter at least once a year. I have the top cover off now and the inside looks clean.

repost this to the Massy Ferguson Classic/Vintage forum. You will have better results getting help there.

I'm not the best one to answer these questions since there are others on the forum far more knowedgable than me, but since no one has responded I'll try to get things started and maybe someone will jump in.

From what I have read here, I think taking the cover off already has limited you ability to do any testing or other diagnosing now. One member was having problems recenty and found the standpipe that feeds fluid from the pump to the top cover leaking internally. I believe he found this taking off the cover with the dipstick and looking inside while the tractor was running and saw oil cascading down the pipe. This would certainly reduce fluid pressure. If the cover was still on I believe you could hook a pressure gage to it and watch the presssure while operating the position lever and seeing the pressures at the down position and up position. That may give some indication whether it is the pump or the relief valve. The only thing I think you can do now is pull the pump and check it out for clearences and check the relief valve for proper operation.

One note: if running the tractor do not put your hand near the relief valve, When it pops off the oil is such high pressure that it will pierce the skiin and inject oil in to your body.

You never mentioned if it had multipower. If it does, your in for a big job. The tractor will need to be split to remove the pump according to my service manual.

Hopefully someone will see this and give some better advice.

Be carefull and good luck

Found an outfit locally that does hydraulics, Complete Hydraulics. The tech I talked to was very professional, I explained the symptoms, he explained the possible causes and laid out all my options. I already eliminated the standpipe, and have done about everything I can do from outside the tractor. After talking with the technician I am almost certain its the pump, have one ordered, about the same price as rebuilding mine, cheaper than online too.

The only other thing I can think of is, If I remember correctly, I have read here that there are at least two different pumps used depending on the age of the tractor. I believe the difference is the number of splines on the shaft that drives the pump so the internal drive on the pump must match. It sounds like you have everything under control so you should not have any other problems.

Take the male QD and push the ball/poppet against a hard surface using a rag on the tip.

On the tractor, with engine off, move the valve lever through all motions.

You from Carleton Place, On. There is another member on this forum from there that goes by AMD and also has a Massey 135 diesel.
