Pretty much decided on a flail mower. Looking hard at a Vrisimo RSS300-96.
Like the width, the unit is well matched to my tractor (JD5095M, 95hp with PTO @ 80HP), like the broad
range of cut height (2" - 10") since I will need clearance on rocks. Also like the fact that it can be built
with hydraulic offset.

Now I start looking at the Maschio line. Their Giraffa series is a bit narrower in cut width than I would like, but
has the added benefits of offset as well as the ability to mow ditches & small sloped boundaries. Curious thing is that
despite the additional hydraulics, the Giraffa is considerably lighter than the Vrisimo. I am assuming that the Giraffa would be
more versatile since it can do flat fields as well as angled or ditch work. Most of the work will be flat, but there are some areas
along our driveway that are sloped and would benefit from the Maschio capabilities.

Primary use will be mowing fields & crop fields with some brush at times, particularly on the boundaries.

What am I missing?
Does anyone have experience with either of these series?

Thanks,

Hello 1026mrg,

Its never a case of what you are missing, it is the utility and flexibility of the mower
and what YOU can afford.

The quality for both lines is very high. The Maschio meets the higher standards for
EU pedestrian safety requirements before it gets uncrated so keep that in mind.

The Box beam construction is the key remember that in any decision you make, AND

A heavier mower has more steel, Perhaps you should look at the next larger Giraffa??

You can have Vrisimo make a change add order to have four wheels installed on your
flailmower to let you safely mow the areas with rocks BUT you sacrifice mowing height.

FOR SAFER MOWING.

SAYING THAT;

having a change/add order to your mower if you buy a Vrisimo gives you more flexibility with
the hydraulic side shift.

BUT you will loose suction to aid in mowing and carrying the clippings over the mower.

If you can tolerate that.......

No matter the mower it will outlast your mule and fit on the next one.

Just a thought but have you looked at the front mounted Maschios?

Hello 1026mrg,

Prices on the Vrisimo are actually higher than on the Maschio. Also, for mowing around pond banks
it is better to spend a few more $$ on a mower that can offset & articulate than to drop the entire tractor
into the drink.

My question here is whether or not the Maschio sacrifices anything material in durability
relative to the Vrisimo which is less maneuverable. Are there any downsides to the greater offset &
angled articulation available with the Maschio? Are there any domestic manufacturers of flails with similar
capabilites?

I am looking at the largest Giraffa at 84" (7') cut width and 100" overall width. The next largest,
the Giraffona, that takes you into 8' or 102" cut widths calls for 140-180 hp.

Am willing to sacrifice mowing height for clearance. What appeals to me about the Vrisimo vs
other domestic flails is the wider range of mowing height from 2" -10".

Absolutely, the Vrisimo is available with hydraulic offset, but it still does not have the offset range or
the ability to do banks/ditches like the Maschio. Maschio has much greater range of movement.

I do not have PTO on the front of my tractor.

I am wondering if the Girafona would be alright with suitcase weights and
loaded tires with your mule afterall???

It might be worth asking the folks at Iowa Farm Equipment if counterbalancing
the mower with loaded tires(duals on the opposing side perhaps)
and suitcase weights would be tolerable with your frame size tractor with the
wheels fully widened?

I would call and ask them just to satisfy curiousity- using the snow blower example a
lot of folks use wider snow casters on smaller tractors(they just go slower)

I trealise its a wider flail mower rotor and theier are more hammers but maintaining
the 540 RPM power take off speed is the issue.

Back to the hydraulics its simply pressure and flow with the hose sizes on the mower and
as long as pressure and flow is available and the tractor is balanced with counterweigths
loaded tires/wheel weights/ suitcase wieghts up front the center gravity is still maintained.

A side hill lawn mower would probably npt work for you if the ground on the banks is wet and muddy.
