Picked up a 1985 Golden 39A on Friday. The stock grain pattern reminds me of the pattern on a copperhead snake.
This thing shoots excellent. Put half a Federal value pack through it this weekend, no problems whatsoever.
Very accurate, as expected. After shooting and carrying my TDS clone so much, the 24" bbl feels like a cannon.
The extra length pays off though, the sight picture is rock solid.
The CCI CB shorts are much quieter in the 24" bbl then the 16.5" TDS barrel.
I may put a peep sight on this one. I'm leaning twards a Williams fool proof or a Skinner receiver sight.
Now I need to make a scabbard for it to mount on the ROPS.

Nice gun! I think you will like it a lot, it is one straight shooting' .22. I got mine in 1982 and still shoot it a lot. IMHO the 39A is one of the most accurate production made .22s to ever hit the street.

I have mine set up Quicksites so I can use my scope and the iron sights. I do that with any gun of mine that has a scope.

I have two of the 39a's. One was purchased new by my father in 1979 or 80. It has seen so many rounds run through it you can barely see any of the rifling inside the barrel. The other is practically brand new still. You will not find a better lever action .22 IMHO. Congrats on the purchase, you'll love it.

The Micro-groove rifling that Marlin used isn't as deep as normal land/groove rifling so it may be hard to see.
I think Marlin used Ballard style also, but only on the very early guns.

The rifling between my two 39a's are as different as night and day. The one is slap ***** wore out. The rifling in the like new one is easily seen.

Congrats on the purchase, they don't make those marlins like that anymore.
I have been keeping an eye out for a good one, but unfortunatley people seem to realise they are a "keeper" and hang on to 'em.
