2004 Mahindra 4110 w/509 BH
As some of you may know from other posts, I've been trying for a while to get my 2004 Mahindra 4110 officially registered for public road use here in good ol' Taxachusetts. Please don't ask why... It's complicated. :( I've gotten a lot of input... some helpful, some not, some outright silly... about how I should have approached the state RMV differently than I did. So far I have met with zero success, but I am not ready to give up yet.

It's been suggested that one of the factors in my failed effort may have been my lack of a title or Manufacturer's Statement of Origin ("MSO"). I bought the tractor used and the original owner had never asked for an MSO nor made any attempt to register or title it. All I have is a Bill of Sale and a copy of the original owner's invoice. While the lack of a title or MSO was never explicitly given to me as a reason for rejection, it would not hurt to have one in hand on my next attempt.

In view of this, I've emailed and written to MahindraUSA several times requesting an MSO (or application for same) with no acknowledgement or response of any kind. Does anyone here know the correct way to go about requesting an MSO from Mahindra? Perhaps I need to go through the original dealer or the original owner? Is there a fee for this document? Have any of you "second owners" had any success at all in this regard? Any and all help is greatly appreciated! :)

What I've been told (and read here in the forum) is that they are not handed out unless you specifically request one... in which case they are mailed to the purchaser by the manufacturer. The question is... How is this done, what paperwork is necessary, is there a fee... and is a subsequent owner (not the original purchaser) allowed to request one?

One interesting question in the case of the 4110: Are MSOs... assuming they can be obtained at all... issued by Mahindra or TYM?

Obviously, I am no authority on this. I can't even get the MahindraUSA folks to reply to my emails or letter. :(

I had a 4110 with Bradco 511 hoe on it. When I sold that tractor, to a Massachusetts resident, he too wanted an MSO. My dealer and I talked numberous times to Mahindra, Tomball TX ( it was their only place at the time) and it fell on deaf ears,. Mahindra does not have MSO's, and this is sad simply because some areas of the country they are needed and Mahindra could care less. What happens is, once people find out there are no MSO's available, they look at other tractor brands..... Mahindra finally sent a typed letter, a real joke I may add, sold serial number so and so to so and so.,... This, typed letter is not an MSO, but, finally the guys bank did accept that letter and I sold him the tractor..,..

Oh Boy... this is not good news. :( What is/was Mahindra thinking? As you point out, regardless of the licensing & public road use aspect... some banks require an MSO or title just to finance. Mama Mia! :(

So much for my next plan of attack on the RMV.

But Larry, I must ask: You moved from a 4110 w/511 to an L48? Was it really worth it? Or did you just win the lottery! :D

I would simply Dummy one up. After a couple hours on my laptop and printer I would have a very plausible MSO. Stuff like that just gets filed, it is needed to check off a box so if they wnat one I would sjut make one up myself.

Now that's funny! :D Not sure if you are serious, but I'll bet you're right and that I could get away with it! God bless modern computer graphics! :)

But again, lack of an MSO or title was never really an issue in my previous (unsuccessful) attempts at registration... so I'm not sure such extreme measures are appropriate at this point. The real problem is *still* quirky state law in regard to non-farm ownership of tractors and RMV interpretation of same.

I am serious, I would dummy one up, over done with, things like this only get a glance and what is the purpose of the request anyway? What real difference is the Manufactured State of Origin? The only thing I can think fo is tax implications, so heck I wouldn't lie on my dummy MSO, I would jsut put in the correct real state. I really would do this. It hurts no one, it is just burerocracy. Believe me living in France, the fench are masters of beurocracy, and I know I'm spellign that wrong can't blame it on my hand disability.

No problem with spelling... we get the message! :)

Must point out, however, that MSO stands for "Manufacturer's Statement of Origin" and has little to do with where the tractor was made. For cars and trucks, it's a mandatory prerequisite for titling and registration of brand new vehicles. While you are probably right that a counterfeit document could be manufactured... if I were caught doing so, I assure you that my worries about getting a ticket for public road use of an unregistered vehicle would be over for good... or at least for the 7-10 years I would likely be behind bars in a Massachusetts state prison for forgery! :D

Until the RMV decides to oppose me specifically based on the lack of MSO or title (which so far it hasn't), I think this option is a bit too risky for my conservative blood. :)

Doug,

The easiest way to title something without an MSO or title is to have someone from a non title state give you a bill of sale. In Missouri, we can title something with a Non-Title State Bill of Sale. It will have to be notarized, and hopefully you have a relative that lives in another state. Check it out, it should work.
