As any of you guys who have older plows you know parts are tough to get, I needed new landsides for my Massey 74 plow and they were discontinued. I cut some 3/4 steel and am going to make my own, Would it need to be hardened? I will run some hard facing on it. How hard is to harden and temper steel? Also how ard is it to make plow shares and shins?

How much are you planing on using the plow? I would just use the landsides for a while and once they are worn a bit take them back off and hard surface the worn areas. I have built up old plow shares by welding another one over top with 7018's. It doesn't look pretty and doesn't work great but it works. Another option would be to find a new share that is common and the right length and drill new holes on your bottom to match the newer style shares. You can weld the old holes shut and redrill if their location is a problem. I have built up old shins with hard surfacing and that worked ok. It works a lot better if you don't wait until the shin is worn through though.

Why don't you use a blade from an old snow plow, usually plenty of steel left when discarded and already hard, this is what I use. You can make points and shins buy cutting and welding.

Yup, I was going to suggest what we call "plow edge" or "cutting edge". Plentiful up here in snow country, very cheap if not free, and harder than a politician's heart.

In fact, I have an old JD 52 plow that I need to make a couple landsides for. Should put that on my TODO list.

Fairly common to weld old leaf springs to the landslide to build them up.

My grandfather was a blacksmith in central Wisconsin. He repointed plow shares using pieces of old worn out hardened steel rasps. Forge welded one half of the rasp to one side of the plow, bent the rasp around 180 degrees and forge welded the other half of the rasp to the plow. Next step is to hammer the point to the approximate correct shape and then finish the point on the grinder. Took him about 60 minutes start to finish with about 1/3 of the time being used to periodically reheat the work piece.

I suppose you could do the job with a few pieces of hardened steel, a stick welder and an angle grinder. I have a few worn out plow shares lying around somewhere. Maybe I'll try this out one of these days.

Good luck.
