Hi I'm new to the forum and I know I'm not the first one to ever need a large lawn roller. I'd like to get suggestions on making one at home. Happy trails and thanks to all. Mark

It's been suggested (and I have considered) using an old propane tank.

I picked ours up along the road a few years ago. It appears to have been a propane or water tank with the ends cut off, and filled with concrete except for a central core/axle composed of a 1.5" steel or black iron pipe. It weighs a couple of hundred pounds and is pulled by a frame of galvanized pipe that extends through the center to a handle like one of the really simple simple wire cheese slicers, like an inverted "Y".

We hook it to our tractor using a trailer hitch accessory that has a clevis on it, and it works pretty well on fresh gravel or softish ground. It does scuff a bit pn turns, but seems none the worse for the wear from it, and it doesn't seem to damage the grass.

My first one was made from an old brine tank, 36" diameter x 7' long. I finally got tired of patching the rusty hulk and built a new one.

The old frame was re-used as was the axle and bearings. I made my own tank using a chunk of 30" dia x 1/2 wall steel pipe and purchased tank heads for the ends.

I've got 3 springtimes of use on it so far, couldn't be happier with it.

Got the heads from these guys. Tank Heads | Pressure Vessel Heads | Home | Commercial Metal Forming Good people to deal with, just remember they will probably ship truck freight. IIRC, the ones I got were 3/16" thick.

Yes, I fill it with water.

On a roller this big/heavy the shaft for the bearings needs to go all the way through the roller
