Tractor
Mahindra 5500 4wd
20 degrees, 12 inches of snow. Went out to start the tractor for snow removal and no start. Tractor was purchased four years ago and has 191 hours on it (yeah I know it's a retirement tractor to work my 80 acres so low hours...). Tractor hasn't been started in about a month but battery shows good. I had been unplugging the "transmission breather" wire while parked to deter theft. Tractor acts as if wire is still unplugged or in gear as it won't even turn over or engage starter (all gauges and dash indicator lights work. Glow plug indicator light works intermittedly). 3 foot snow drifts on and around tractor. Is it possible that moisture could have gotten somewhere from all the snow that's causing problems or could it be in the transmission breather wire plug at the back of the tractor (far right wire in pic), left side rear near three point?

If any snow had gotten into the connector I would think that you would have seen it before plugging it back in, besides at that temperature it's not going to be in a liquid state. You might check the fuse that controls that circuit just in case it got blown when plugging it back in.

Thanx for the suggestion. First time this tractor has ever not started. I'll pull the fuse tomorrow morning.

Make sure the pto and the shifters are all in neutral, check the safety switches on the pto and there is a neutral safety switch under the right foot rest.

Yeah checked and double checked that all shifts were in neutral. I serviced the tractor a couple of weeks ago (checked all fluids and lubed all lube points). Tractor worked until the lube job. Kind of tight underneath so I figured that I may have knocked something loose. Crawled under this afternoon (after cleaning several driveways by hand earlier today) and found a loose connector underneath tractor, right side under footboard. Plugged in and finally juice to starter but battery low because of my earlier tinkerings. Anyhow, cleaned the terminals, and placed battery on charge. Should start tomorrow once battery charged. I'll let you all know.

It was the neutral safety switch underneath the right foot rest. I knocked it loose during the lube. Charged the battery and back in business. Thanx to all for the advice!

Thanks for letting us know what it was. It will help someone in the future (maybe me ) :)

Found out about the transmission breather neutral wire by mistake. Was cutting cedar trees on my property on one of those pesky cedar branches caught and pulled the wire plug loose. Tractor wouldn't start, starter wouldn't engage nor turn over. Took me about 10 minutes to find that wire but it was easier than the one beneath the footrest because it was on top by PTO takeoff lever and easier to see. I would not have thought about the switch underneath the footrest for a while if Galen hadn't of mentioned it...
