Mahindra 4110
I have a 2003 Mahindra 4110 with about 850 hours on it. I've owned it since new and the hours have been easy, mostly field mowing. I have a question concerning the clutch. While field mowing, I went to back up into some tall brush and while releasing the clutch (pedal less than half down) the clutch fully engaged and the pedal no longer worked. I had to turn off the engine to stop it. While it was off, I was able to get it into neutral. The clutch pedal has full movement and feels no different than normal but it no longer operates the clutch. Without opening up the tractor, I check all external linkage, joints, pins; everything look good. What would cause the clutch to stay engaged? It seems to me like it would be some type of return spring. Any ideas would be appreciated.

When mine had these symptoms last year it had broken one of the bolts in the pressure plate. This caused some of the pressure plate to still be sprung and operate, giving the feeling that it was still good but the side where the broken bolt was still dragged some on the disc keeping it engaged and not able to shift gears. Since I was experienced at splitting my tractor already, I was able to replace the clutch and have her going again in one day - I had an old pressure plate from mine (the original one) from years back and it got me going again just dandy. Good luck with your repair !!

Skipmarcy could be right, I have seen that a couple of times. It could also be the pilot bearing locked up.

Skipmarcy & OldGinTractors, thanks for your replies. Since I'm not experienced with splitting the tractor it looks like she'll be taking a trip to the dealer and I'm sure it will cost a bundle. No complaints though, this is the first real problem I've had in 9 years.

I do not know how closely related they are but my 4510 had throw out bearing problems about the same hours and age. The necessary parts were not that expensive but splitting the tractor is the cost.

Thanks Yanmars, the dealer said pretty much the same. He's saying it will be 20-25 hours to do the job.

Sure sounds like alot of hours for a dealer to do a clutch on one they should know already. Like I mentioned earlier, I did the clutch R&R in approx. 6 or 7 hours and that was with a floor jack on a piece of plywood on a gravel driveway & totally by myself !! It should absolutely take no more than 8 hours to replace the clutch assembly, from removing the first bolt to driving it out the door ready to work. Heck, I did a rear split on my 4110 a few years ago by myself which is much, much more involved and I only had about 12 hours in that total.

Skipmarcy, that's great information...thank you. I'll be sure to use that to try to negotiate with the dealer.

Anyone else out there have estimates for how long it takes to replace a clutch in a 4110?
