I was at a Kubota dealership today with a friend who is looking to buy a tractor. Just tagging along so to speak. While there, I asked the Kubota salesman to give me his honest opinion of the worthiness of my 2005 Mahindra 2615 hst w/ fel. He basically stated that Mahindras will only last about half the life of a Kubota and are cheaply made for their cost. He stated that buying a Mahindra was like flipping a coin: either you got a good one or a lemon. He stated that the hydraulics are subpar and the drive train is inferior. They overheat routinely and the transmissions hang up constantly.

I told him I must have gotten lucky since my tractor had 170 hours already and I have had no problems so to speak. He said that my problems would start at 300 to 350 hours when my hydraulics would weaken and my tractor would probably become sluggish due to transmission issues.

Has anyone else heard of these issues? I sure hope he was mistaken or simply partial to his tractor line because I plan on having my tractor for several years and hope that I did not spend unwisely.

Mapp,

Surely you didn't expect to hear something different from an Orange salesman, did you?

It's a rare salesman who will man up and say that Brand M or D or K or whatever builds a great machine also... It just isn't in their blood. Most would rather scare you into buying that orange (or whatever color they are selling) paint than actually work and SELL you on why Orange is better than Red... Or say that, "yeah, Red tractors I think are a bit better in this area, but Orange is better here and here." It probably just isn't going to happen. Don't get me wrong, there are some really honest, good salesmen out there, but they're few and far between.

But, I'll bet you already knew that;).

The only time I ask what a salesman thinks about a different brand is when I want to get a good chuckle and see how straight of a shooter he is. I've only come across maybe 2 or 3 in my time that I would truly trust any opinion that they had.

Typical saleman trying to push his product.
Pay no attention to him.

He is neither "mistaken" nor "partial to his tractor." He's partial to his commission and bad-mouthing the competition is part of the game. Next time ask him about JD and CNH -- bet he has "reasons" why they're junk too -- in fact I bet he would tell you they never have any problems with Kubotas -- which isn't true either, just read their forum threads. The only way you can tell if a salesman (car, truck, tractor, RV, boat, or implement) is lying is if their lips are moving. Not to say there aren't honest dealers, there are quite a few and many on TBN. But the pure sales guys -- watch out -- they have no long term interest, only as far as the next commission check.

What is real fun is talking to a salesman that worked for one brand and bad mouths another, then he starts selling the brand he was bad mouthing. What an about face you will see!! I bought a new chainsaw recently, the guy sold Echo, Shindaiwa, Solo, Tanaka, and Husky. He tried to tell me that all of the new Stihl saws were junk, funny thing was he didn't sell that brand!! The he told me that the Huskys were a brand he didn't push too much because they were sold in the box stores. At least he was honest about his reason. I bought a Shindaiwa top handle from him, but told him that I had a 35 year old Stihl that has never let me down. He said yeah but all they make now is cheap unreliable stuff. Salesmen?

And if you want to hear the same putdowns directed right back at Kubota, just walk into any John Deere dealership.

When I was looking for a tractor I heard just about every line in the book. But I bought what I liked and what I thought would fit my needs.

Honest salesmen are a dying breed.

People ask me about Mahindra vs. Deere/Kubota/NH all the time......I tell them they are all good tractors but with the Mahindra you get a lot more tractor for your money. :)

Talking down about your competitors only gets you lumped into the negative experience many buyers have while looking for a new tractor. Any salesmen that is too busy telling you the faults of another brand vs. the advantages of his brand is full of it. Laying down the facts and specs is the real way to sell a tractor, not badmouthing another brand from one persons "opinion".

By bad-mouthing the competition, salesperson is missing a golden opportunity to sell "why you should by from me / and this dealer". Unless as a dealership they have nothing to offer.

Durability... ...well, lets see. There's a Cub-Cadet 7260 (same exact tractor as the 2615) a couple doors down from me with about 1700 hours on it. Looks a little beat up, seat's torn, tires are shot, some rust, but runs like new. It got a new clutch a while back, but other than that, just fluids and filters.

That's a good part of the reason I went with Mahindra.

The Mahindra 2615 is built by Mitsubishi and has been around for a very long time. The parts availability is excellent (filters are expensive though). They were sold by Cub Cadet before Mahindra and the engines can be found on tons of different small excavators and utility equipment.

I talked to a Kubota salesman recently whose girlfriend did warrantly paperwork for the local Mahindra dealer and he admitted he was amazed at the low rate of warranty work.

I found it hard to take many dealers word for anything when tractor shopping. I liked my dealer's honesty which is why I purchased from him.

Well I was looking at tractors last year and happened to stop at the New Holland dealer. He told me that Mahindra was a class "c" tractor and New Hollands were class "a". I never heard that before, anyhow he went on to tell me how the Mahindra tractors don't last etc, etc..I have had my first problem with a slight ticking in my 2615 gear, and my dealer came to my home, picked up the tractor, fixed it and delivered it the following day. No more ticking sound, and it looks like it did the day I bought it. I am sold on RED.
Now I know that the problem was minor in nature, the valves became a little loose, they think they were set off spec at the manufactor. We will see, but I trust their opinion and believe I won't have anymore problems with it. So far the tractor has done every thing I have wanted it to do. I brush hog approx 30 acres with a 5' brush hog and it never over heated once. I have a good machine.

Just a thought after that line. When I was looking at tractors I really wanted a Massey Ferguson but could not find a recent model used one any where for a year. I saw numerous new hollands that were traded in with 100-600 hrs. You take it for what its worth but that tells me something.

Interesting ......When I was looking at tractors at my Mahindra dealer, he said earlier in the day he had to pick up some parts from the local New Holland Dealer. Whilst there, NH dealer told him that Mahindra was really starting to make noise in the market with some very good products.
