2004 Mahindra 2310
Hi all,
I have a 2004 Mahindra 2310 and looking through the service manual doesn't tell me the battery group size needed for my tractor. I didn't have the time to pull out the current battery which is an Atlas and I could see well enough to get a size off of the battery.
All the info I got from the manual is 12 volt 75ah and not even what cold cranking amps is needed. I went over to TSC to look at the Exide heavy duty batteries but there were no listings of Mahindra in any of the 3 battery reference books hanging from the shelf. I'm also considering the Optima Deep Cycle Yellow Top, or a Duralast Heavy Duty and Commercial Battery, any suggestions or warnings?
Anyone have a list of which battery will fit?

Thanks for any help in advance.
Ted

It seems I should have posted this in the Owning / Operating section.... if one of the moderators could please move it to where it should go.
Thanks,
Ted

Hi,
My opinion on tractor batteries:- as big as will fit!
and from what I have seen, there is generally room for bigger than the factory installed.

Unlike cars that seem to use whatever space is left over, tractors are more generous in that area.
Big, because when cold and using glow plugs you need all the CCA that you can get.
Also very often larger standard batteries cost a lot less than brand specifics.

Just be careful to get the posts in the same locations otherwise you'll be replacing the cables.

Just a plain group 24 will work on it.
Try to get the most crank amps for your money !

That's why I was curious as to what CCA battery to get.
I'm glad you mentioned the cables, I was thinking of adding longer battery cables so I'm not cramped in putting the posts on.
I pulled the battery out about two months ago to service it and thought what a pain it was to get to the post with only 2 inches of clearance above the battery, and the post were on the back top part of the battery. If the post were located towards the front of the battery unbolting the post would have been easier. At the time it would have been easier to have cables about 10 inches longer to bolt them on and then slip the battery in.This is what prompted this thread to see what the correct battery group size was supposed to be in the tractor.

Thanks,
Ted

Thanks that will help.
Sometimes buying online is also cheaper, especially if you get free shipping.

dimensions and posted CCA's is the best freind you got .....measure it up and see what will fit...The Ultimas I like and use them ....Boats trucks and whatever else I purchased 1 yellow top once.....went bad less than a year learned the warrenty is less than the red one (but the yellow cost more?) so I stick with the red tops (still got the factory batt in my 06 7520)
Hey ted what's the turbopiper stand for? ...If its the pipers i Know I had a turbo arrow iV and now a Aerostar Super 700 ...both have turbos

PS the shorter the cables the better off you are..... Don't skimp on cables or connectors copper and big = more Amps

You know that the different color Ultimas are for different uses don't you? I have just the opposite luck with Ultimas. Red tops never make it out of warranty, ( have lasted 2 1/2 years each time) at least I get free replacements. My brother has had a yellow top in his travel trailer for more than 10 years and still works fine. I put blue top marine batteries in my travel trailer and they have been good for over 5 years now.

Mark, how many hours on the 7520? I have an 04 7520 that I got in March of 05. I have put over 500hrs on it and still have the original battery.
Very happy with the 7520.

I just picked her up 3 months ago with 1200hrs.......
Gotta get ss QA for the ml275 loader then a 4in1 then a heavy brush mower/hog
runs strong

I like Ultimas but it seems if you deep cycle them to zero they quit and don't come back.... (its mentioned on all of their warning stickers) characteristic of a wirewound?) thats what i did with the yellow one (left the key on for a week)

good old Advanced Auto pointed out the diff in warranties
thanks

Hey Mark,
After tractorErnie posted the group size I started a search and found out alot of things I didn't know about all the types of batteries availiable now, espacially the AGM's. I have been using the Optima yellow tops for about 15 years or so but never really thought about the way they should be charge or maintained, because I never had any issues in the vehicle they've been in.

Betweenthis link and this one I learned alot of things about batteries and types of chargers to use.
I guess I'm not too old to learn a few tricks after all. Luckily for me I do happen to have a smart battery charger to do all the thinkin' for me...

During the online search, I also learned about the 3 main companies that make alot of the batteries for the different stores.

As far as the cable lengths, I'll only need them about 9 inches longer than they are now to get the battery in front of the hood latch. There just isn't enough room for my hands holding tools to be safe enough.

I'll let you know what happens, and thanks for all the replies.

Ted

OH, the turbopiper isn't related to planes but because I used to be active in a Ford Turbo forum and my profession as a Piping Designer.... :confused2:
