2023 LS MT240HE. Kioti ZT. Honda Pioneer 520. Ford 8n. Ford 9n. Massey Ferguson 1080. Ford 2000
Hi,

I am trying to decide which of these two tractors to buy for my small property maintenance business. I will primarily use a six-foot brush hog to mow brush up to two inches. I will also use a five-foot box blade to do gravel driveway maintenance. The Mahindra dealer near me has a Mahindra 1640 with a shuttle shift transmission, and the LS dealer has an MT240HE with an HST. I may eventually buy a grapple to use on the front of the tractor, so lift capacity and height is important.

Thanks,
Luke

I might be prejudiced, but the LS 240HE wins the battle. Both are good tractors. The LS probably has better parts support, being that you can also get parts at a New Holland dealer.
The second reason is the HST over the shuttle shift. The HST will be easier to operate.

the ls and the mahindra are good tractors the ls just has better specs in this match up, are the costs close? the only thing about the LS is the turbo engine. the 4 cylinder NA in the mahindra is a nice engine.

Thanks for the replies, I was leaning toward the LS because of the better specs. The LS is also $1500 cheaper at my closest dealer, and it has better financing. Now I just need to sell my John Deere and talk to the LS dealer.

Just FYI, The MT240 Manual states a 5' brush hog/Rotary cutter is the recommended max size.

With that said, I have a BH215 that I have cut some large 2" brush with and it had no problem with it, heck, even the Brush hog looks like it's only been used to cut grass.

I have no doubt the MT240 can handle a 6' cutter on fairly level ground and brush no bigger than 2" but that's a lot of weight if a 3pt model (well any well built cutter capable of 2" cutting will be), a pull behind would be easier on it.

I always lower the cutter to the height I'm going to cut at or very close to it, make sure the throttle is at idle and ease the PTO switch on and off until it's up to speed then throttle up to PTO speed. When I am ready to turn off the cutter, I slowly throttle down and once it's at idle speed, shutoff the PTO.

How does the MT240HE get 5 hp over the MT235HE with the same engine displacement? Or even the MT230HE which also has the same 114.7 cu in? I think the Deere 3038 gets its extra hp over the 3032 via a turbo.

Turbo and fuel rate. In 2020 the 235 did NOT have a turbo. I have seen a person post (here or FB) that his 235 has a turbo so not sure if his was a 240 mis-labeled or some got turbos along the way.
even today the 235 is listed as NA

That's what I see in the specs also.
230 is NA (assuming naturally aspirated)
235 shows NA also (what gives the 5hp more?)
240 shows TC (assuming turbo)

Is a TC worth the cost / another thing to fail? I'd tend to go with the simpler 235 NA and have one less major component that will fail. Thoughts?

You have NA and TC correct.
To me a Turbo diesel is preferred for the higher horsepower, better operation especially at higher elevations but usually better fuel economy as well.
Use a good quality oil, change it on schedule or more frequently, use proper warm up and cool down times and a turbo should last many, many years.
