Hey guys,

I haven't signed paperwork on a tractor yet, so far I sat down and talked numbers on Kabota (L3901), NH (work master 40) and Mahindra. I didn't stop at JD (3033R) yet but still plan to just know there not gonna beat the deal Mahindra is offering.

My question: is the price of the upgrade to the 1538 HST or 2540 shuttle worth it? With the cash back program I can get the 1533 cheapest, like $1,100 more the 1538 HST and $900 or so more for the 2540 shuttle. The 2540 shuttle is around or just over $2000 more than the 1533 HST. I don't remember exactly but it's close to those numbers.

My question with the 1538 over the 1533 is: will another 3-4hp and a little bit bigger tires noticeable and worth $1100?

My question on the 2240 is the bigger frame, noticeably bigger tires and more pto power worth the extra 2k? The bucket is bigger by 6" and it lifts 2" higher and can turn sharper than the 1500 series, I know all the numbers difference but long term investment wise was curious to hear other opinions.

Surprisingly the dealer was pushing the 1533, I think because he had so many lol.

My needs for a tractor are not great, now lol. Size wise I'm after a tractor big enough to handle a round hay bale with a bale spear on the loader. I have no desire to brush hog or run an attachment that requires pto min power but like the option down the road if I need to.

I'm more concerned about frame size, weight and hydraulic power on attachments so far I can't see a reason to get the bigger motor.

Also the attachments I decided on was FLB (standard on Mahindra), Mahindra Land Leveler 6ft, Mahindra Standard pallet forks and to use the rest of the attachment incentive I got a grader blade 6ft. I have no plans to mow with the tractor at this time, I do have plans to buy a tiller used, and maybe a backhoe later down the road. I also will be filling the tires for more weight and stability. It's washer fluid? I have been told it's not corrosive but I can't see the extra h2o moisture helping the rims.

I would rather buy too big than to buy too small and out grow the tractor. I live on 3 acres but have cows and chickens, my parents have around 40 acres and I plan to drag logs and firewood. I have about 100 yards of gravel drive, and my parents is around 500-600yrds, so I already have plans on fixing a lot of gravel drive lol.

Sorry for the length but for the most helpful input more information is better than not enough lol. Thanks

John

I also want to say that I have researched all the tractors in my area, compared them all the way down to where the tires were made, to the point I was informing the NH, Kubota and Mahindra dealers about there own products and competitions lol, even the companies they worked for, (I did research on number of employees, gross income ext) What I found was, I would be happy to put each one in my barn, the selling factor for Mahindra was price, loader lifting power and all around hydraulic power. I found they all had things I liked, things I didn't and good and bad reviews ext.

I'm sure you are aware that Mahindra makes a 2538 which is a HST instead of shuttle. The 25xx tractors are TYM machines and the 15xx are Mitsubishi machines. Both use the Mahindra, no DPF engine. The 1538 and 1533 share the same frame and size but do change tire size. Most dealers I have dealt with recently are offering deals on the 1538 so the price jump should be minimal and the 2538/2540 should be about the same price as the 1533. Bottom line is you may need to shop a bit.

For me personally, I went round and round with this and settled on the 15xx series. It's a bit more refined and I wanted a Japanese tractor over the S Korean (TYM) machine. You get "more tractor" for the cost with the 25xx and pay a bit more for the 15xx.

Try the pallet forks before you buy. The Mahindra forks don't have the best sight line because of the bulky top. Your dealer hopefully has another option if that's an issue for you.

If you plan to run tire chains in the rear make sure they will clear the fender if you go with the 1538.

I was under the impression that Mahindra was made in South Korea, the motors were made in Japan by Mitsubishi and shipped to Mahindra to throw in there tractors. The dealer I talked to also said Bosch had there hands in making motors for Mahindra. I could be wrong but with all the research I have done on tractors that's what I read. NH previously Ford I confirmed by a dealer is owned by fiat since 1996 and produced in South Korea, he said motor and all is Korean. Kabota I heard was assembled in the states but not sure if there manufactured in the states or imported and assembled here. So far all the tractors I looked at has had American rubber on them though. I could be wrong but that's my understanding.

The 1533 and 1538 are Mitsubishi built tractors made in Japan with Mahindra engines made in India. The 2400 series machines are Korean TYM made tractors with Mahindra engines. I've been seeing less trouble with the 1500 series machines on this board. Overall the 1500 series are nicer machines, rubber floormats, comfy seats, heavier loaders and backhoes, etc.
The most important thing however is to make sure the dealer will support you well. Even if you have to change brands or even pay a little more, choosing a good dealer is that important.

Learn something new everyday, I wasn't as impressed with the Mahindra dealer if I will be honest, the JD dealer I like much better, the new holland dealer i liked but there building is much newer. The Mahindra dealer seems ok, but I may pay them another visit before I make a final decision.

Second that comment- much fewer forum posts about 15xx issues.
My local Kubota dealer also sold NH. The smaller NH are made by LS (they have a steel plate on the back that lists LS as the manufacture). To me the NH/LS was close to the 25xx series but less warranty and a bit more $.
I also second the comment about dealers being a major deciding factor. Having good local support is important if you are the kind to have the dealer do work on it etc. If price is the bottom line and dealer support is secondary you will possibly save by shopping around-Other states may not charge sales tax.
