I have recently started to look at new tractors and have priced a M7040 and M8540 but today I came across a used M9540. It has 300 hours, hydraulic shuttle, 4x4, Rops with cover, and FEL. I was wandering what a good price range for this tractor would be I was thinking I would get a new one but if I could get a very good deal on this one I might go that route.

Any comments would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Brandon

300 hours is nothing - we have not had our m8540 for very long and have close to 70 hours on already. The downside is that there might not be much difference in price between that number of hours as new and so financing and warranty wise might be better off with new. The other option is that the M8540 and M9540 are exactly the same unit - including engine model except the engine is tweaked an extra 10HP - would you notice the difference? Not likely so we have bigger tires on with the 12 speed tranny and went that route - same tractor essentially but slightly less HP for a cheaper price.

The M5040/M6040/7040 are built on the same frame and you do notice a big difference between that series and the M85/9540. Just some thoughts.. :)

It is very difficult to price a newer used tractor to compete with a new tractor. The difference is 0% financing. A $49,000 decked out 9540M at 0% financing for 60 months is the same as a $42,000 used tractor at 6% for 60 months. So for the used tractor to be competitive it has to sell for significantly less than $42,000. You also have to value the reduced warranty period and unknown treatment and service of the tractor. In the M series the options can make a big difference. Cast iron wheels, hydraulic shuttle, remotes, 3rd function, all can make a big difference on price. Be sure you are comparing apples to apples.

Don't underestimate jdavis' advice. The 0% financing available right now is a huge deal. As stated, a $49,000 0% loan is the same money as a $42,000 6% loan. This does not account for the unit being used. If you factor in the unit being used (which is very personal/subjective), the used tractor should be in the mid $30k range.

Also, you should decide if you want the M5040/M6040/M7040 form factor or the M8540/M9540 form factor (size) tractor.

If you decide to go with the larger M8540/M9540, the M8540 is a deal. There aren't much difference between the two.... UNLESS you decide to go CAB. The M9540 CAB model has dual-speed which comes with some features of it own.

Since the used M9540 unit you are looking at is ROPS, there isn't much difference between that and the M8540 except a few HP.

If you have to finance, I would go with new (whichever model you think is best). If -- and only if -- you can bank-roll it yourself AND get the price down more would I consider the used M9540. If you have to finance the used one, I would try to get the price down A LOT more. Probably not going to happen though.

The free financing really does create havoc on the used market...
