M8540 50 Hour Service -- Is Manual Capacities Correct?

I am getting ready to do my 50 hour service on my M8540. In the manual it states that the capacity of SUDT in the transmission is 64 quarts. For those that have done their own service, have you found the capacities in the owners manual to be fairly accurate?

I am wondering if I will actually get 64 quarts out of my transmission or if that is a 'bone dry' scenario that you will never see when changing the fluid.

I'm just trying to get an idea on how much SUDT I have to buy. 16 gallons sure seems like a lot!

Aside from asking my dealer, I am probably just going to buy the 64 quarts. My reasoning is this:

64 quarts for the tranny
7 quarts for the front diff
4 quarts (2 each) for the front bevel gear

I'll just buy the 64 quarts and do the transmission first. Any extra I have left over will be used in the front end. I live 3 miles from the dealer so making another trip for the remaining fluid needs is no big deal.

Now I have to search for a 20 gallon drain pan!

I did my 50 hr service last fall, the book is close.
But it痴 hard to tell when trying to corral 16 gal. of used oil running every ware !
I do know however that I put back in just over 15 gal.

I think the M7040 has the same transmission and mine took the three five-gallon buckets easlily.

For draining I use a washing tub type of galvanized pail that is usually used for watering animals. The capacity is on the bottom. TSC sells them.

Then a cooking pot is used to dip out the oil back into the five-gallon buckets (via a funnel) for recycling.

I used gear oil for the front end and found that not nearly as much oil was used there as called for. It was as if the Front Differential Case and Front Axle Gear Case were one in the same as far a the amount of oil that was specified. Gear case = 3.7 qts each side, Differential = 5.8 qts. I think it is all connected - at least on the M7040.

It's a good thing I didn't buy an M or I would be SUDT-poor. :laughing:

Once you include the front diff and bevel gears, it is a 20 gallon purchase!

At $6 per quart (one gallon price -- not sure if it gets cheaper by the 2.5 gallon), that is $480 plus tax!


I was going to ask for a Tractor Tunes for my b-day, but maybe some SUDT is in order!

why SUDT rather than just UDT? it's just a gear tranny...are u way up north? savings could at least buy u an extra filter for the days ahead. good luck bb
