M-F 1440
My best friend has a few small farms that he/we cultivate to feed his herd of horses (usually around 25). We started working with whatever old equipment we could score, but as he became more successful in business he switched to buying new stuff from local M-F dealer. We did try a bit of green paint, but overall my observation from the driver's seat is that the state of quality/service/reliability of modern farm equipment is HORRIBLE on a good day. We have never had a season without a tractor, hay conditioner or bailer failure - in spite of being genuinely prepared for each season. Even when new equipment arrives "field ready" it almost ALWAYS needs a follow up trip or two or THREE from dealer as whatever is sent seldom actually works. Tractors have been 50 - 120 - 170 HP M-F. I now have his first 45 compact (cooling system failure at low hours) replaced by a newer one that is also Japanese so not a bad bit of kit. The 120HP and 170HP though are French and have been positively HORRIBLE (I think I mentioned that already, but...). The 7490 was the field tractor, and when it worked did that job not bad, but a terrible choice for chore tractor (the 120HP was much better for things such as snow clearing - but still not a skid steer!). I don't think there was ever a moment over the 11 years that the 7490 had 100% of everything working.

Had to load a car with no front suspension at my place last week so buddy said he would drive his new tractor straight from dealer (just a few miles from my home and farm) and pick up the front end and drag it out to the street so I could back trailer under (back alley, so trailer would pull under overhead crane). He showed up in a 50 series Fendt (similar to what was given as a loaner when the 7490, as usual, failed during harvest).

The feedback from this situation is first that he got back nearly full value for his 10 year old M-Fs. The price of tractors has gone up so much one new one seems to consume the value of two older ones at full price. Would like to hear what others see - particularly in light of noting that the last highway tractor I bought new was $120Cdn. A well equipped new one today is literally THREE TIMES that price. When I look at my books, I probably make about the same level of gross revenue as I did 25 years ago. If I had to do that at the trucking rates today, can't see how possible to survive. What's the farm level of income vs. costs for same period?

Then there's the Fendt thing. I see no category for that brand here, and having a lifetime of experience with German vehicles (and other Euro stuff) my first reaction to what I have seen is seems to be a nice product line, but wary of the support that might be required in future. What says the TBN accumulated wisdom?

My tractor purchases all depend on the proximity of a dealer and if they have a competent service department.

I'd buy a Fendt in a minute if there was a dealer nearby. There isn't so that nixes that.

Massey and Fendt are both AGCO products. Do t know enough about either, but I would bet some lines are more similar than different.

My farming cousins are Fendt through and through... also the most expensive option but they would buy again

I know this is only second hand opinion.

In Oregon we contracted out field work to prepare for Christmas Tree planting and the Contractor there swears by and not at his Fendt...

I am not in farming business. But as much I have spoken to ones who are, Fendt is considered most expensive. But more pilot friendly, some even say - luxury cabin  A

But man - 240 Hp mod 724 Vario = 200k € 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

My friend can be...uh....a BIT on the eccentric side once in a while. He likes driving the Fendt so much he has taken into town for lunch and out shopping a few times!!! At least a bit cheaper than his Porsches...or maybe not?

it is a german thing, to drive tractor to the city. Normally it is done weekends, with well overhauled veterantractors. Look on then is really fancy (y)

For prices it depends. A lot of Fendt's are more expensive than standard Porches. But some rare / special / racing cars could be very pricey

Someone in Austria got the Autobahn sticker for his saying it meets all the requirements…

Not only can you turn a field you can also take the autobahn into town…

Sure beats the 1 cylinder Steyr I cut my teeth on…

I have 2 of the French built AGCO’s
Massey 7495 with no big problems
Challenger MT535B with Quicke loader with no big problems

Both needed brake jobs when I bought them which is pretty common at 5,000 hours. Owners will usually sell them instead of doing brake job because it’s about $5,000. Just have to make sure you don’t pay too much.

Both of my tractors have Fendt CVT’s, rear axles & braking systems in them. So you get a lot of Fendt parts.

My parts/servicing dealer (Agriteer) sells Fendt more than Massey now. Very highly spoken praise on Fendt, but $300,000 for a 300HP tractor? hah!

A 300HP Fendt with 10,000 hours will still sell for 100-150K.

Tractors are priced too high for me. I buy well used, but I do like the AGCO brands.

My strategy wasn’t to quit farming, but to make off-farm income by mowing lots of large properties, clearing brush, construction, etc.
No way to make enough scratch in farming under 1,000 acres unless wife has good job, or you make money off-farm, or you were given good equipment and barns with no debt by parents of willed it to you.

I bought everthing myself and have found the used stuff begins to have failures before its paid off. You can farm with relic stuff that’s dirt cheap and park it out back if it breaks and get another old cheapie (Ford TW’s, old Case tractors, etc.). The BTO’s seem to be able to buy new green paint (Fendt/Deere) IF they have a lot in row crops.

Old Magnums are dirt cheap, but pull like freight trains and modern enough to keep me happy.

Love it! My 12YO grandson drives pretty much every off road thing in my sig lines except the D5 and 941 Cats (he is not heavy enough to run the brakes yet...but has been running D5 steer and blade for 6 years). He also can match his Mom in operating the excavator (not mine, on loan from Fendt friend).
