This 1983 Massey Ferguson 230, w/Perkins diesel, was running well while bush hogging; then, began to seem to lose power and quickly die. I changed the fuel filter, checked for clean fuel & good fuel flow from tank and "all" lines, bled (hopefully) air from fuel lines -- but it still has these same symptoms:
It almost always requires spray starting fluid to start. It has started twice (out of around 25 to 30 attempts) w/o the starting fluid. It will idle -- or rev -- normally for a couple of minutes, or as long as 20 minutes or so, as smooth as silk... but then: will ping or knock and/or rev a bit (as if ether had been injected) and then idle again, then continue to repeat this at closer intervals until it finally seems to lose power(fuel?) and goes dead. It will even operate as usual for a very few minutes and then just seem like it runs out of fuel (when under a load).

I did think that I may have put old fuel with water in the tank just before this began happening -- but have not seen the first sign of water in any fuel throughout the system -- and, did put some "Seafoam" in the tank to try and counter any adverse reactions for that possibility. Could the additive have loosened something that is clogging the injector pump???

It just recently had a new alternator, battery, and starter installed; and the fuel injector pump was completely rebuilt ($500!) about 3 years ago.

I get a steady stream of fuel from the tank petcock valve, so I don't think the screen inside is clogged. I also get a steady stream of pure, clean fuel from any line I disconnect or loosen "anywhere" in the system, so it doesn't seem like air lock.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I have been told that it "must either be sucking air somewhere, or the pump is going out." Was also told to "smell the engine oil to see if it smells like diesel -- if so, the seal is blown and will have to be replaced." Has anyone done this repair? I don't even know what/where the seal is they are talking about. Is it a "do-able" job for the average Joe?

I just wondered if anyone from the forum may have encountered such a situation and if so, what was your "cure?"

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Re the "diesel in engine oil" there is a seal in the front of the injector pump that sometimes fails , letting diesel into the engine oil Telltale is engine oil level rises ,and oil smells of diesel.
When you tested the fuel flow had the engine stopped itself, or did you shut down then test?

In the fuel tank on the fuel cock inlet is a small filter that con NOT be seen . Sometimes this blocks and when the engine stops there is no more suction so the obstruction drops off. VERY frustrating.
Solution was to blow back into the tank and was good for several more weeks. This was a work around as I had the fuel tank off twice to try to clean it and failed. The design of the fuel cap has a lip which means that you can't get every last dreg out. (cue paint removing language)

This sounds almost exactly like what happened to my MF241 a few months ago. I went through the steps the way you did (more or less) and ultimately determined it was a faulty fuel pump. The fuel pump on the AD3.152 on my MF crawler looks nearly identical to the fuel pump on the 903.27 engine on my 241, and they're noted to be a weak point in the system. Luckily the replacement was only $24 on Amazon, and as soon as I put it on and bled the lines, everything was back to normal.
