I have a lx279 17 hp kawi, hydro drive. It will barely back up and will not back up a hill at all. engine runs fine it seems to be in the tranny. The tranny is full of oil, I bought the correct oil at the JD dealer. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

There is an adjustment at the rear of the tractor for reverse. When standing behind the tractor and facing it on the right side there is a flat metal strip that when you push on the reverse pedal it raises aginst a button. This button controls the reverse speeds. This has an adjustment to make it raise higher by changing the position of a slideing bolt in the bracket. Check to see it it is moving much by standing off the mower and depressing the reverse pedal with mower shut off. You might only have to re-adjust this flat rod. I have a maintaince manual but it is not handy at this moment. The other easy problem is you may not have quite enough oil in the plastic level indicater.
Adjusting this is more complicated than I though after looking in the maintainance manual.

You might have to have your dealer adjust or check it. From the trouble shooting chart there 8 things to check.
1) Oil level low
2) Control linkage out of adjustment.
3) Brake linkage damaged.
4) Drive belt worn.
5) Internal filter plugged.
6) Shock absorber binding or damaged.
7) Control arm roll pin broken.
8) Parking brake is on.
Good luck, check the simplest things first like the oil and drive belt. The belt may be stretched or worn. Thats very hard to replace by owner.
None of these things are internal transmission problems.

Does the tractor start having issues as soon as you start it, or after you've been using it for awhile?
