Sat up until almost 1.00am and only managed a couple of barely acceptable shots.

Yeah, even with telephoto lens I find any moon shot I attempt is disappointing to say the least. Need to mount on a telescope.

Next one is in 35 years, I'll get out the 500mm.
I have taken moon shots during the day and they are perfect and I suspect this was atmospheric as all the media shots I have seen are the same.
We have a 12" Dobsonian telescope but they don't lend themselves to astrophotography and I don't want to go back to a Newtonian.

I can still see it very plainly here. Its 5:25 am pacific time here. I was going to take photos but with my longest lens it still looks just like what it is - a full moon.
