lt 185 wont come out of free wheel

a friend of mine has this jd ltr 185 .it threw the belt he said he reached under shifted it into freewheel so he could push it in his garage , he put the belt back on and it seems to be stuck in freewheel.
any help would be greatly appreciated

Happened to me with my lt160. I have by the hitch a small round pin I can pull out our push in to engage free wheel. It feels like a connecting rod inside is loose so I pushed it in all the way and got it to engage, but I will not pull it out again because I am afraid it will never engage again. If you can wiggle it a bit or follow the pin back he might see what is causing the problem.

I went and looked at his tractor. the lever that it pushes on top of the trans seems to be moving all the way but still freewheels nothing seems to change. somthing inside worn out , broken ?
