Has anyone researched and located a higher capacity generator that would direct-fit or adapt to a G3038H. That anemic little charger LS put's on certainly does not do much for my charging confidence or my desire to fit a winch to my tractor. I have a 140 amp Powermaster on my Jeep and I really love it - get the revs up and it goes to full output, drop the idle and she stays right there - hook to a tree through a snatch block and pull away after doing the back cut and the tree falls where you want it to. I will be disposing of my CJ so I thought I could use my tractor since it is more maneuverable and better at skidding than the Jeep.

The AC/Delco Division of the old General Motors made a ton of single wire integrated alternators. You'd have to build mounts and such but you could put some real electrical power if you were creative with building the mounts on that tractor. We once repowered one of our old tow trucks and took a 100 amp Cadillac alternator to run the light bars and accessories. Huge thing but it put out some electricity and would carry everything running at the same time effortlessly. That is the direction I would go if I was in your position. I have looked at the toy alternator on my MT125 and it certainly does the job on my little stock tractor but there certainly are a lot of alternatives if one was creative.

I do believe I've answered my own question. This is a universal 110 amp at idle, 220 amp at 1200 RPM output alternator. While I've not looked at dimensions, the universal mounting will work with our tractor. Not dirt cheap at $350 delivered, but when LS is charging that for a replacement battery, it isn't too bad. It would certainly have the output to run an electric winch, for example.

So do people also use a starting/ deep cycle for winch use too?

I do on my CJ5. I've never had issues with using it that way. I have a low speed/high output alternator on the CJ. You start the car, run the idle up until you see the volt meter increase the charge, showing that the field has been activated, then let it idle and it continues to put out full output. My wife was my winch operator and I did the tie offs using a manlift with the cable going back to a snatch block. That way, we could top those huge trees when we took down 270 eucalyptus trees at our ranch, just the two of us.

I don't think you have to use the Optima that I use, but I've had good luck with them and so continue to use them.
