I attempted to do my 300 hour oil and filter change yesterday. The filter was again a bear to remove but not as bad as the original. This time however, the stem that it mounts to came out with the filter. The owners' manual says if this happens to contact my local dealer. I have done so and he will respond later as he doesn't know about this issue. The stem also secures a filter housing to the block. I had no choice but to put the old filter back on and fill it with oil to get it back into the barn. It doesn't appear to be leaking. Has anyone else had this happen? I searched the forum a few different ways and found mention of it once but only in passing with no explanation of the resolution.

I suspect there is a gasket between the filter housing and the block which may or may not need to be replaced and I suspect there is a torque spec for the stem install. I also suspect the mention in the manual means it is a known issue and may have a modification that happens on reinstall like a shim or some such.

My deepest socket won't reach it so there is that little problem to resolve.

Thanks y'all

Looking at the service manual, I dont see a gasket or seal on there. Which is kinda odd. See image.

That housing is also, apparently, the oil cooler.

I have changed the engine oil a few times in my tractor, and have not had this happen. I have never heard of this happening either. Please keep us updated.

Not specific to LS tractors. This design is common on engines that use a cooler between the oil filter and engine.

This has happened to me dozens of times over the years in automotive service. Usually when oil filters are overtightened.

Remove the stem from the oil filter (deep socket, channel locks, bench vise) it should not be very tight.
Reinstall stem on engine and torque to spec. Without the spec, I would guess 60ft/lb
Install new filter being sure to lube the new gasket and only tighten 3/4 turn once gasket contacts the base. Average person can do it by hand.

If the stem is properly torqued, and the oil filter is not overtightened, the stem should not come out again.

That's funny, my dealer JUST told me that LS didn't have Service Manuals... then they texted me a diagram off a PDF from the service manual, without the second page that identified the numbers on the manual page.

LS has service manuals. I dont know why dealers are withholding them. Probably so you dont do your own maintenance and they can charge you for it. There are a few 'leaked' manuals out there.

Did a bit more digging in the service manual for this issue. See image

That doesnt seem like much at all. Thats about 13ft-lbs.

Yep, I've looked many times trying to find a manual for the LS XG3140H and no luck so far, I've found 3000 series manuals but it's just the parts list/diagrams, no service manuals so far. I'll keep looking and calling different dealers and see if I can't find one someplace.

That looks like a standard oil cooler take off from the filter. The nut that has come off with the old filter that should hold the adapter in place when the oil filter is changed. It looks as if the filter has been wound on too tight and come up tight to the nut, then when the filter was removed, it took the threaded pipe with it. Provided the gasket between the adapter and the engine block is good, simply put it back together, and it shouldn`t be any problem.

At 50 hours I had the experience of the filter being way too tight and it came out with the housing being very crushed in the process as I've read others have experienced. I lubed the new one and put it on with 3/4 turn past just seated. This time it was easier but I was surprised I had to use channel locks again although without as much force and less crushing involved but still ridiculous. I don't understand how it gets so much tighter over time. That torque spec is what I needed. It is surprisingly low and may explain why it backs off often enough to warrant a not in the owners' manual about calling your dealer if it happens. The dealer said he hadn't heard of it happening and I haven't heard back from him with the info I just got from you good folks. Thanks

Hopefully the wording of the title will help members find this info in future searches.

The dealers do have the service manuals. From what I was told its part of the software they get installed from LS. Since I have had so many issues with my tractor, the dealer gave me the 10 PDF files that make up the service manual for the XR4100 series tractor. They total over 100mb of data. Ask your dealer to put those PDFs on a thumb drive for you.

I have also had this issue happen. Its basically what you dealt with, the filter was on way too tight. Tighten the stem back on as tight as you can, oil the filter gasket and only hand tighten the filter and it should not be an issue again.

Glad you got it fixed without a trip to the dealer.
