I have a 40 acre parcel that has been pasture land for as long as I can remember. It is the only portion of my family farm land that I have left as pasture land. For the last 8-10 years I have rented it to a guy who keeps it bushhogged and uses for grazing. Also, the southeast corner has a very nice catch pen that he uses a few times each year. Time has come to plant some trees, put in some food plots, and turn into great wildlife habitat.

I welcome your suggestions. Here is what I have so far:

a. The 40 acres are outlined with the blue line
b. South border is Talladega National Forest timber land, lots of pines, but the larger trees just across the boundary line are white oaks and red oaks.
c. #1 in the picture is loaded with white oaks, small food plot and couple of deer stands.
d. #5 is a paved county road
e. Between yellow line and road are a stand of pine trees that were planted about 6 years ago.
f. #2, #3, and #4 are ditches that run through the property, and they can give you a sense of elevation and slope. They are wet most of the year but only #3 has a small amount of water in drought conditions. These ditches have way more growth in them (voluntary pines and sweet gum) than show up in this 2006 satelite picture
g. Green oval is the area I have selected for food plot. It has a tractor path thru it that has been compacted over the years and I will probably keep it, and plant on both sides.
h. The red line is a proposed fence to create a lane so the farmer can get his cows from one pasture to another, and so he can still use the catch pen. Some of the fence is already built as I have a green field in the southwest corner, and had to fence it off to keep his cows out.
i. Property to the west I sold to the farmer. Just across the boundary line are some beautiful persimmon trees that the deer frequent during early bow season.
j. Solid 20 year old pines to the east, solid pine and hardwood to the north

What do you think? Where to plant sawtooth oaks? Persimmons? Pines? Food plots?
