Why is it recommended to change your oil after 3 months reguardless of miles driiven?

When it takes 5 or 6 months to put 3000 miles on a vehicle, do you change at the recommended 3 month interval anyway? I had not been doing this and wonder what damage I might have done.

Does synthetic extend the recommended time between intervals?

Thanks,
Moon

Good question moon, I'm a very low miles driver and it takes me over a year to put on 2k miles. Thats when I change the oil in mine.

regular oil oxidizes and acids form; thus dino oil can not hold up overtime.

Mike,
How long would you go for OCI for dino time wise? I'd be interested in your opinion since I know you've had your oils tested.

How about synthetic, would it be the same as dino as far as time between oil changes?

Thanks!!

depends on what engine. If working correctly etc. A dino oil will deplate faster then a synthetic (grp 3 and over). The synthetic will hold up longer and better if the additive package and ZDDP are high. Now a group 3 is a weird one since most times it acts and holds up like a dino oil, not a synthetic.

Oh ,the 3000 mile deal is made up. You will NEVER find that in any manual. Most are 7,500 miles or 5,000 miles for severe.

I am doing extended drains in my lexus, once per year in my BX and every other engine I have.
