Thanks y'all! I'm just getting started at restoring, rebuilding, customizing, and using garden tractors. My first project is a JD 165 Hydro lawn tractor. I've done the bodywork and a tuneup and the FB460V Kaw is running like new; however, the Hydro is going out. Rather than rebuilding it, I'd like to upgrade it to a garden tractor by using stuff from other tractors. Any input on the best components to use and the do's and don't will be greatly appreciated!
I just picked up a 1968 Sears (Roper) Suburban Super 12 with 3-point hitch, plow and front blade. I'm amazed at how good it does with turning sod and pushing dirt and that is with old turf tires and no weights! I'm replacing the tires with lugs on the back and 3-ribs on the front. I also have chains on order for both tractors.
So far I have acquired the 3-point hitch, plow, and blade for the SS12, and a sleeve hitch lift and rear box blade for the JD. I also have a dethatcher. I will make a sleeve hitch to 3-point adapter, timber drag, chain drag, and cultivater from parts of an old Oliver Row Crop 60 that I no longer own. I'm sure I'll get more ideas from reading about others projects on this forum.
