Mahindra 3316 HST & Fordson Dexta
Took a break while bush hogging yesterday evening and went to raise the hood to clean the screen in front of the radiator and found I no longer had a hood release.

Today I went by the dealer's lot on way home to look at how it worked but they didn't have any 3316's and the 2816's looked like ?newer models. No one came out to question me, etc. so I left and headed to property. Figured if I couldn't get it open I would take it to them.

Looked at illustration in parts manual and then last page of owner's manual and today managed to snake a clothes hanger with a hook bent at the end into the hole on the latch and get it open.

So now I have a clothes hanger hood release till I get the replacement parts.

Well I guess I could have used baling wire, or the electric fence wire; but I stepped it up a notch with a painted white coat hanger. Wrapped up the mowing this evening and the hood release is still working. I should have the correct parts in a week or so.

I will have to try to figure out how it came loose in the first place and if there is anything I can do to prevent it from happening again.

Tractor sure works well for brush hogging. All the rain we have had some sections were taller than the tractor.

Warning to the wise. When you buy a tractor, old, or new; go over every nut, and bolt you can find. Factory workers often miss tightening to required torque settings. When brand new, I had loose bolts on the front of my tractor, and on the fan shroud. The shroud slipped down, and consumed the plastic fan blades. :(

If you have a loader mounted, it is critical to inspect the mounting bolts. You could do extreme damage to your tractor if they aren't speced, and locktite applied; as per your operator's manual.

This actually 'had' a hair pin spring clip if I understand the parts drawing correctly. Not sure how it came loose; but, you can bet I'll be adding additional 'holding' power if nothing but a one time use spring washer like the axle retaining caps on kids toys....

The three point steady rods or linkage have pins with hair pin springs; one hair pin came out but the pin stayed in linkage (till the tractor took a trip on the trailer down the highway and when I got to my destination the three point was floping into the tire on that particular side. So smart me got a PTO pin with the swing away wire bail; I noticed the other day the PTO pin still in place but the wire bail was ripped off of the pin!:( A bolt with a nylon lock nut is looking good now that I have a tool box :)to have some wrenches handy!

I only post this stuff cause if it came loose on mine it might on someone elses too. Then who knows.

I spent 2 days with a metal detector in about a 1 acre section looking for the throttle lever to the Dexta last year before I finally found it. I spent 3 days a couple of years ago looking for part of my son-in-laws brush hog that the gear box cover blew off of; using the metal detector in another part of the property. I gave up after three days and then noticed the cover laying right next to my truck where I parked it next to a tree those three days:eek:

I figured with the new Mahindra my days of looking for parts was over; guess they are since I'm not out there walking the field looking for it.......

Well after my order somehow getting lost and never shipped to me I received the parts a week or so ago. I decided to put them on today. I turns out it uses a cotter pin to hold it in place. I added a mylar washer and a 'speed nut' before inserting the cotter pin.

I would be interested what the rest of you have holding your hood release lever to the hood latch. I would not have thought a cotter pin would have came out and am wondering if originally had a spring pin.

My 3215 uses a cotter pin. Unless your's was not originally bent right, not sure how that ever came off!
