We lost a little female cocker spaniel on 12/6/96 and I didn't want another dog, it couldn't fill the void. But Fudge had already been born, on 10/21/96. I said I didn't want him, but on the way home I called and Mrs. Alan L. said "I got a Fudge", she had gone ahead and picked up the puppy.
When I got home I found he had already taken over my brown recliner, and in fact was almost the same color.
Long story short, this furry teddy bear became a large 40 pound cocker who considered himself a lapdog, and quickly became part of the family.
When he was 6, he became paralyzed in the hind quarters due to a ruptured disc in his back. The surgery was very expensive and euthenazia was the only alternative. We did the surgery and saved his legs for the rest of his life.
This morning at 8:20 our boy died from cancer. He was happy and healthy and we only noticed about labor day that he had developed a limp in a front paw. First they said it was a soft tissue injury, then x-rays revealed a tumor in his upper leg. Over a period of a couple of weeks we saw the regular vet, orthodedic surgeon, oncologist, and radiologist and the news was worse everytime.
Turns out they think he had hemangiosarcoma, cancer of the blood vessels, which he had in his lungs and spleen when discovered, so there was no curative treatment. We tried palliative radiation on the leg and it fractured before his 2nd treatment.
Its been a tough 6 weeks or so. Please keep us in your prayers, we miss that boy so much. Even last night he ate, did his business, and wagged his tail. His buddy our female 4 year old cocker Gracie misses him too. She cannot figure out where he went.
