We lost a little female cocker spaniel on 12/6/96 and I didn't want another dog, it couldn't fill the void. But Fudge had already been born, on 10/21/96. I said I didn't want him, but on the way home I called and Mrs. Alan L. said "I got a Fudge", she had gone ahead and picked up the puppy.

When I got home I found he had already taken over my brown recliner, and in fact was almost the same color.

Long story short, this furry teddy bear became a large 40 pound cocker who considered himself a lapdog, and quickly became part of the family.

When he was 6, he became paralyzed in the hind quarters due to a ruptured disc in his back. The surgery was very expensive and euthenazia was the only alternative. We did the surgery and saved his legs for the rest of his life.

This morning at 8:20 our boy died from cancer. He was happy and healthy and we only noticed about labor day that he had developed a limp in a front paw. First they said it was a soft tissue injury, then x-rays revealed a tumor in his upper leg. Over a period of a couple of weeks we saw the regular vet, orthodedic surgeon, oncologist, and radiologist and the news was worse everytime.

Turns out they think he had hemangiosarcoma, cancer of the blood vessels, which he had in his lungs and spleen when discovered, so there was no curative treatment. We tried palliative radiation on the leg and it fractured before his 2nd treatment.

Its been a tough 6 weeks or so. Please keep us in your prayers, we miss that boy so much. Even last night he ate, did his business, and wagged his tail. His buddy our female 4 year old cocker Gracie misses him too. She cannot figure out where he went.

Sorry about the loss.
I would go to the dog pound and find another hound, before you know it the next one will take over your recliner. I have lost lots of pets, dogs etc...and it hurts, but you gotta move on.Last week we lost a beautiful GSD to the bloat,he was fine one evening and the next morning he was stiff as a board,my wife loaded him in the wheel barrow for me to bury and by the time I buried him that afternoon the flies were already claiming their territory and I put him in the bucket on the tractor and hurried up and dug a hole and covered him up good.

That is so sad alan. I know what you mean exactly. One of your family has died. Any time one of our dogs dies, we go through the same kind of mouring as if it were a human death. My sympathies to your family.
I have a 16 year old golden retriever. He is looking really old lately, slowed down a lot, doesnt come for long walks anymore, has arthritis in his rear hips, is totally deaf, and now his sight is going. When I'm working in the garden he still comes down to me and "minds" me. He still follows me around the house, and when i'm out in the workshop, he comes with me. He's been my best friend since he was a pup.
Seems like every morning when I go to wake him, it takes him longer to get up, sometimes I have to give him a good shake to wake him. A couple of times my blood has run cold to think he was gone, but so far, he's still with us. I know I'm going to cry like a baby when he does die.
You are in our prayers alan, Its true, another pup might cheer you up but give it time.

If you really love animals, and live with 'em day in and day out, it's only natural you feel the loss like any other family member. We're not "spoiled, rich Americans" for indulging this way of thinking. Here's the thing to avoid: in the end, they are NOT people, do NOT have souls, and there is no "doggie heaven". But our Heaven will be a place of eternal joy, so if the Lord thinks we need them to be joyful, He'll let them be there too.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Alan, so sorry for your loss. It's always difficult to lose a close friend.

Alan,
Sorry to hear about the loss of your little buddy. :( To non-dog lovers, it's hard to fathom a crushing blow such as your loss, but to all of us who can relate, we know exactly where you are right now. :(

Reading your story nearly choked me up, because just for a second, I walked in your shoes and could feel your pain. :(

I too have a little buddy. He's a 6lb chihuaha with 5 lbs of heart and is 3.5 years old. He follows me around and I think he worships the ground I walk on. When he passes, a little piece of me will go with him, forever.

My wife's little buddy(mine too) is another chihuaha who is 12.5 years old. She had him when we met. He likes me, but loves his momma. We know he's old and the day we lose him, I'll be hurt, but my wife will be crushed:(

We plan on always having 2 at the same time. That way the "new guy" will inherit some of the ways of the "old guy", thus, a little piece of each one we've ever had the pleasure of living with will always be with us;)

Again, I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your buddy!
