Hi I am looking to buy my first ever 4wd tractor. I want it to clear the snow from my 300ish foot long driveway, maintain that driveway, be useful for landscaping and most of all be usefull for maple sugaring. That being said, my budget is as low as I can find. I really dont have the extra money right now to buy it since I just built a new and rather big sugarhouse. But with building the sugarhouse I knew tht I would have to expand and get more taps and that is what brings us to todays question.

I found a early model B7100 with a loader, rear blade and brush hog. It is the gear drive and it has 3400 or so hours. The guy wants $6100 for it. Is that reasonable or should I try to talk him down?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to TBN ToughAsStihl. :)

B7100 working little mule, but the only down side it doesn't have power steering :( and if your not careful going thur mud etc. w/bucket load or even empty sometimes the front tire will catch and snap the steering from your hand and you'll end up getting your fingers also knuckles slap. :(

Do you know the year of B7100.
Has the engine had any work done to it.
Have you heard it run or given it a test drive.
Was it well kept.

I dont really know much about it. I am going to go look at it tomorrow. What questions should I ask, what should I listen for?

For whats is worth I paid $4500 for my "newer" B7100 HST a year ago with 5 & 7 foot rear blades, 5' rake and 4' finish mower. I would describe the tractor condition as "well used and abused" The mower was/is beat to ...

I would look for fluid leaks, tire condtion, any maintance records, loose bolts, missing or stripped bolts other signs of wear & abuse.

Things I wish I saw before I bought mine include:

1) FEL leak down, to test it. Raise the FEL and the 3-point ( Hopefully with the mower attached), shut it off and watch for leak down. My the FEL will leak from full height to on the ground in about 20 minutes (thats wayyyy excessive)

2) the rear wheels hub assembly won't stay tight. the bolt loosed up many moose ago and it was never tightened. now the axle is so warn it can't be tightened enough to prevent wobble. In addition to looking at the connection drive the tractor on a smooth surface in high gear, if it feels like your swaying back and forth on a boat (like mine) something isn't straight.

3) The frame was cracked where the front axle center piviot connects, It is really hard to see but mine was cracked from around the center bolt to about 2/3 of the way to the side (both sides). Another few bumps on on un-even ground and I think it would have failed completely.

In spite of the things I wish I would have known the tractor is a real work horse and will move more, and drive places that will amaze you, overall its a great little machine.

One final word of caution, the wheel base is very narrow and the tractor is more prone to tipping (espically with ag tires and FEL). so be careful on slopes.

US$6100 for 3400 hours. I am sure it's worth it to the seller but I'd be hard pressed to hand it over. The implements included are worth the difference of what I'd offer up (US$5000), so there lies the value of the machine. It is a good work tractor indeed.

I'd say that is a fair shake, with all things considered within the context of manual steer and transmission.

I paid far less than that for the identical tractor with same implements and believe the asking price is high by about $1000 with 3000+ hours.

Thanks guys, but it looks like I wont be getting a tractor anytime soon. :( We decided we couldnt put more money into sugaring until we start to get out of debt from building it.
