Input wanted from tractor owners (revised)

I'm still doing a project dealing with steering systems for a tractor

if you own a tractor that you use for things other than mowing, i would like if you could answer a few questions about yourself

1. What kind of tractor do you own and how much horsepower does it have
2. Would you be willing to use a joystick to steer
3. Would you consider yourself someone whos a big spender or frugal when it comes to your tractor
4. Would you consider yourself more "drive it til it's dead" or "it's my baby" in terms of your tractor

Ha, lack of responses because most tractor owners on this board have glorified lawnmowers. Sorry, it's true. Now before I get beat up for saying that, I'll tell you that I will get a load of pm's agreeing with me, like I always do.

1. Allis Chalmers Wd, hp, I don't know. Also an MF model 85, again, hp I don't know. Both good sized tractors, around the 40+ hp range but just a guess.
2. No to a joystick. How about an orbitrol valve and steering cylinder, real simple and reliable and very powerful. How about 4 wheel steering? I can take my old AC model WD tricycle places smaller tractors couldn't even comprehend going, 4 wheel steering would help this.
3. Big spender when necessary, just want to spend my money wisely.
4. From the age of my tractors, figure it out.

Re: Input wanted from tractor owners (revised)

Guess I'll bite too.

1, My big tractors are 70-95 hp.. but mowers only.. I have some 13-50 hp that are general purpose.. like seeding, loader work, drawbar applications.

2, No.. certaintly not a single joystick.. Have used crawlers with 2 sticks.. but it keeps your hands tied up so you can't oeprate other controlls.

3 Ambigous question. It's possible to buy an expensive yet economy tractor. For instance.. a New holland 7610s is an economy unit ompaired to a 7740.. both about the same 'amount' of tractor.. yet 7610s is cheaper.. .. yet it was still a near 30,000$ machine when new. so still big ticket.. yet economy.

4, drive it till its dead.. then rebuild it then drive some more.. Though i do have a few parade models that live in a enclosed garage with a coat of car wax on them...

Re: Input wanted from tractor owners (revised)

1. What kind of tractor do you own and how much horsepower does it have

~2004 John Deere 2520 - 26.4 engine horsepower, 20.5 PTO

2. Would you be willing to use a joystick to steer

I'm willing to do most anything, but I probably wouldn't want a joystick. As mentioned you frequently need your hands for other levers and the like. Having the option to steer with a knee is also nice - especially since in a tractor you're not going very fast. If you really like the joystick concept, Mercedes had a prototype F200 a while ago you can take a look at.

3. Would you consider yourself someone whos a big spender or frugal when it comes to your tractor

Probably a bit of both. I spend money on gadgets and toys, but given the chance I'd rather do something myself.

4. Would you consider yourself more "drive it til it's dead" or "it's my baby" in terms of your tractor

I don't think those are mutually exclusive. I'll probably drive this tractor until it or I no longer function properly, but I do baby it and wash off the mud occasionally. However it's a work vehicle and it's part of the job description to get scrapes and dings.

Re: Input wanted from tractor owners (revised)

1 - Kubota B8200HST 19hp

2 - Don't think a joystick would be the thing for a small CUT style tractor. I would not mind trying it, but don't think it is the ticket.

I have used joystick electrick over hydraulic on skidsteer/track loaders.(ASV RC30, CAT 246 if I remember right). They were the way to on those machines. One joystick for driving the tractor, one for loader control. I like that better than foot control for loader and twin sticks for driving the Bobcat.

3 - Both. I put the money needed for the features I needed, but not really beyond that.

4 - My tractor get used. Not abused, but used. I guess middle ground on this question. I do take good care on maintaining it, so I do expect it to last a long long time; I'm only at 1200 or so hours; I expect it to last twice that. It's 23 years old now, I expect another 20 out of it before worrying about it.

1. JD 790 27 hp, 240D yanmar 24hp
2. Not on a tractor, have on other implement
3. Not frugal, if needs it, it gets it. Generally makes life easier.
4. Buy new, drive till dead, rebuild go again.
