Toro HMR 1600 44-in
My 23-year old Toro HMR1600 just bit the dust (serious transmission problems). Looking forward to getting some advice on a new machine.

My advice is don't go to a box store like Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, etc. They sell junk that is cheapened up to appeal to consumers that only shop for price and don't care that it won't last very long. Yes, John Deere makes great tractors and mowers, but they also build cheap junk and sacrificed their reputation to chase after the general consumer that buys only based on price and name recognition.

Tell us a little about your situation. How much area do you mow? Is it lawn or pasture? Why type of grass/vegetation? Hilly or flat? What's your budget? Do you want a lawn tractor or a zero turn?

I just bought a Simplicity Conquest this summer. It has power steering, hydro drive, automotive style suspension, and the 52" manufactured deck. I really like it and it gives the legendary Simplicity cut. I was a little skeptical of the suspension, but it really does deliver a smooth ride on my bumpy lawn. The seat is mesh so your back and butt stay cooler than with the standard padded vinyl seat. My only complaint is that the Conquest only comes with the manual mower lift. It is not hard to lift the mower but is kinda cumbersome. Definitely worth a look.

If you have a hilly lawn and need to be nimble around objects,
I recommend the Husqvarna Rider 322T AWD
I've got about 25 hours on mine and I'm just so amazed how much traction and stability it has on the hills,
and how easily it scoots around objects.
Plus it's a much quieter machine than my Wheel Horse tractors were.

In general I think the Husqvarna Rider has a good reputation to give long excellent service.

Below is a link of an older 2wd Husqvarna Rider
"Gem99ultra" a member on this forum, posted an interesting thread of his Husqvarna Rider 155 with 2500 hours on it.

Don't think you'll find anything that might last 23 years. I have a husqvarna 2346xls that t bought a few years ago.($3000) It's wore out and shot except for the vanguard engine. I've put a lot of money in it too. Pay more money and buy a commercial brand and they may last you for awhile.
