Re: Looking for addon for finish mower \"golf pattern\"

I remember posts describing something like that to get patterns like on the pro ball fields. As I understood it, the goal was to actually bend the grass in the direction of tractor travel. Could that have been it?..................chim

Re: Looking for addon for finish mower \"golf pattern\"

yap somehow they had rubber or hard plastic like a mud flap on rig and had it infront or in rear of deck to stand the grass up. I now have a few peterbuilt hard plastic mud flaps cut up to go across to try it but i wondering if it was in front or in rear?

my 6.75hp 22" pusher has a rubber type mat on rear wondering if that's how they had it searches had no results but tons of finish mower stuff..

Click here to do a google search on LAWN STRIPING. Lots of good information to get started.

Simplicity lawn tractors have, in my opinion, the best striping pattern of all lawn tractors. All it really involves is a roller accross the rear of the mower deck. The grass lays down in the direction of travel. Go down the yard, turn around and come back. Then look at the lawn. The grass is slightly layed down away from you on the downstream pass and is actually leaning towards you on the upstream pass. The slight difference is picked up by your eye. Here's a link to Simplicity's lawn striping page.

Re: Looking for addon for finish mower \"golf pattern\"

You should install the flap on the rear of the mower, as it will be the last thing to go over the grass and lay it down. It is, as other have said, the bending of the grass in different directions that create the stripes. Working at a golf course, I often go out and "stripe" and although the machines that I use are quite expensive ($24,748 according to the Deere web site, below), it really is only just a roller across the rear of the cutting unit that produces the strips. The key is to bend over the grass the entire width of the mower, so the roller, or rubber flap, needs to be the entire width. Some tips for mowing stripes: the dark and very clear strips you might see on a golf course or a baseball field are the result of mowing the in same direction many times. If I wanted to make clear strips on an area that had none, I might mow it two or three times before moving on. To keep the same strips, you always want to mow down (or with) the light colored strips. Another point, although stripes look good, you can end up with long grass, so its a good idea to change the direction on the strips every once and a while. Have fun out there, and I hope your lawn looks as good as the local golf course.
I figured I would add a link to the type of John Deere mowers I use to stripe areas of the rough at the course I work at: John Deere Professional Mowers
