Buying Advice Looking at John Deere 750, need advice.

Hello,

First time poster, long time reader/searcher of TractorByNet... Amazing info here.

I am looking to buy my first tractor. I’m located in Northern CA. and the tractor will be used for chores around the house and property.

The tractor I am going to look at tomorrow is a John Deere 750 4wd with a FEL and Box Scraper. Owner states its from the mid 1970's. Tractor has approx 1500 hours on it. I understand its only 20hp and not a large tractor. For my purposes that should be OK.

Is the 750 a good reliable tractor?

Are all parts readily available?

Anything I should look for besides general condition?

Any known problems with this tractor, and would you recommend this as a good basic tractor?

Any idea what they weigh?

He is asking $8000 for this tractor. Is this a fair price if its in decent shape?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Im going to look at it tomorrow and would really appreciate any guidance you guys can provide.

I had a 750 a couple of years ago. It was a dandy little tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It was right around 20 HP. I used it for finish mowing, raking, and post hole digging. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I didn't have a FEL on it. How well it would work a FEL would depend upon your intended type of work. When I bought it, it had 250 hours on it and it looked/ran fine. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I paid $6,000.00 for it. $8,000.00 sounds a little high for that tractor with that many hours.

I have had a JD 950 4x4 FEL 33 hp for a little over 6 years. Everything I have ever heard about the x50 series of tractors has been good. Mine has about 2200 hours and runs great. Paid $8600 for it.

David, I owned a 750 for about 10 years and sold it for about $5,000 here in Central Va. Mine had the front end loader. It was a durable and dependable machine. The asking price ssems rather high to me. It is a basic machine, no frills, but will get the job done. That model of tractors was made in the mid 1980's I think. One of the good things about a Deere is that parts are readily available. The main thing is to see if the machine has been taken care of and not abused. willie jones

What would a fair price range be for this tractor if its in good shape for its given hours?

How is this tractor to work? Easy to use or cumbersom?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think JD started selling the 750 ~ 1982. 8k is way too much. I doubt it sold for that new. I'd offer him 5k max.

Thansk for the advice... I decided to pass. The tractor ran good, but was in pretty bad shape. The hood and fenders were pretty beat... and he wouldnt go any lower than $7500.

I have an 1983 , 750 ,550hrs and it's been good with a couple understandable problems. Yours sound a little high with that many hours but the FEL adds value. If it has been well maintained and the guy would go about $7500 I'd buy it with the understanding that you might have to but a little in it. Parts are all over for these tractors. John Deere has all the parts. But they are not cheap.
